  1. Would this be a black Ghost knife you're talking about? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JljQSDUvboc. If so you can pick these up from your local fish store. Don't really see them that often on TM. From the fish store expect about $40 - $50 for a baby. They eat neons, cardinals and anything that will fit in their mouth when they're older. main food are flakes, those vege wafers that you feed to loaches and blood worms aka red mosquito larvae. Else you might be talking about a fire eel. They're pretty cool and on my big plan of things to get.
  2. I run an external filter on my tank and my water quality is really good. Much better than before. The water is sparkly and not dull as prior. I've been wanting to get one for ages and glad I finally have!
  3. I've just bought myself a 120. Great tank looks fabulous. I'm not at all keen on the inbuilt filter tho. It's really loud and noise and I can hear it from the other side of the house so I've got a canister filter instead and that's just a backup. I'm not sure about the Discus as I don't have any. Someday !!
  4. Yeah the stripey ones are the Tiger Barbs. I think close runner up for 3rd favorite in my tank. Behing Ghostie and the Gouramis.
  5. Hey thanks guys for all the help that you've given me on the Cardinals and Rummys. I don't think they can fully fit in his mouth it's not that big but I'm sure he'll have a good try at it anyway. So.. now onto trade me huh. are really good together. This is my old tank and I've upgraded to the grandady of granddaddy tanks which they like a little better. The trick to more than one I agree is lots of hidy holes in the tank so everyone has their own space to play with. Also you may have an 'alpha' fish which for my tank is a little obvious. Thanks Guys
  6. Pardon my newbie-ness but what is LFS?? I've done my research prior to putting the 2 in the tank and this is ok and doesn't mess with them. They are inherently blind and hunt via electrical pulses that they send out and lateral line hunting. Having the 2 in the tank has not caused any issues. They've been together for the past 2 years now and get a little deflated if I remove one to another tank for any amount of time. The rummy noses weren't on the vid as they tend to hide round the back of the tank. The same with the Ghosties they were hiding. I'm also thinking of selling the torpedo barbs as I'm not that keen on them and the foxtrot that thinks it's a barb. lolz. Most of the fish in this particular tank came with the purchase. I'm thinking of selling the lot and restocking with something else.. such as a fire eel.
  7. This is normally due to a new tank syndrome. This is sometimes due to high nitrite levels.. use a test kit or take a sample to the shop and they'll test it for you. Normally a water change is a good start but basically it means you got no bacteria on those noodle stuffs. So all the bad stuff is going back into the water. Check the filter is all good aswell and the stuff is put in the correct way. Also avoid feeding the fish for a while... you need the bacteria to clean up all the bits in the water first. 1 week maximum depending on the type and variety of the fish. A water ager might help but doesn't always. If the tank gets heaps of sunlight see if you can cut that down. If it's a hexagonal tank and no backing paper add some paper to it. (Sunlight rebounds off the walls of the tank and increases the amount of light in there. Putting some dark paper on the back absorbs this light). The best thing for it is patience. It will come right once the bacteria get a hold in there. Do a water change quite often but not too much else you'll take out the good bacteria again. Hope this helps you out.
  8. Hi guys.. I think I have a problem... I have this new tank right and it's mint. Really liking it. I have 2 ghost knives which really is what I've bought the tank for. On purchasing the tank this came with neon tetras (20 - now 19 :-? ) and Rummy noses (7 now 6 :-? ). Which I wasn't too keen about. It would seem that my big fishies have been doing a spot of their own fishing at night whilst all is quiet. The Neon's look really good.... but should i sell them?
  9. Loving the tank set up. I have a question for you? What were you doing with the Kauri gum cause I was thinking about putting some in me tank but just haven't got round to it. Did it react somehow?
  10. I have a 4ft tank with 2 Ghost Knives which are renown for eating ihabitants. I have them in a tank with some tiger barbs and they get on fine. The tiger barbs are good as they are a nice colour swim around alot and are mid swimmers/ top feeders. They look great in a school.
