  1. I'd think I'd refer to those 'inbetween fish' as 'cool-water' or subtropical fish. (or 'temperate'?). You can't really say heated or unheated cause as someone mentioned it entirely depends on where you are and how warm you keep your home. I'd say a cold water fish is one where just about no temperatue is too cold!! Anything else is not a coldwater fish As far as where to post, I'm really leaning toward subtropical too and I would post my own issues like this I think: - tank issues etc could go in freshwater (cause algae problems and water conditions etc. would be the same whether your tank is heated or not). - coldwater section for fish where people 'never' have to worry about the water getting 'too cold' (ie: goldfish, wcmm, leopardfish etc) - freshwater for stuff like the corys, BN's, Borneos, guppies etc that people usually keep in heated tanks (ie: fish that WILL suffer or die if the temp cools below a certain temp)
  2. This is the thread I was referring to: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/-vp243877.html
  3. I think plants can affect the pH too depending on the time of day (and what part of the photosynthesis cycle they're in) I have a very heavily planted pond with only 2 fish in it and the pH was hugely different in the evening compared to the morning. So try testing a different times. My small tank alsoi had high pH for quite a while. I think in my case it was due to decomposing algae and slowly dying plants! Once I got that sorted it came right. I also started rinsing my filter wool more often since it was easy to get too.
  4. cuz he knows you can see him if he's in those?? 8)
  5. Yeah there was a thred on here recently that said someone apple snails had made snacks out of some of their fish.. I'm sure you could find it if you try a search! from the menu up above.
  6. Don't forget some computers hooked up to the net..and apparently some pepsi vending machine it seems but I'm not sure why! Somepoeple would never leave have to leave the shop
  7. those apple sails may eat some small fish! (yuk)
  8. Happy wet wedding anniversary anyway! Remember though... your anniversary is a day you should SHARE!! So don't leave Mrs. L to do all the work all by her lonesome
  9. It is good news! :bounce: I was pleased to find them. I though one of the leopards was looking rounder than the others so they were obviously happy in your tank!! I found them yesterday although I was pretty sure I'd spotted 1 of them 2 days ago but then couldn't find it and assumed I was seeing things! I'll do my best with them and hopefully we can get a decent population of them down here. They're neat fish and I'm enjoying them so thanks
  10. ok. Crushed flake it is. Thanks. Do you know many fry would a female would typically drop out of curiosity?
  11. I had to take them out of the tank. I just planted it up 10 days ago so while there is a decent number of plants they're all very small and sparse yet (but growing nonetheless) They spent the night in a maggi plastic stock container. I'll transfer them to an ice cream container. I think that should be big enough! I may buy a net breeder trap but I've dose my tank with a bit of wunder cure this morning cause the new fish are flashing (Grrr!) and I don't think the fry would appreciate that. I may put them back in when that's done.
  12. Never mind.. there will be more I'm not really expecting my 2 to live since i'ts my firt time with them anyway. Do you have any tips? Where did you end up putting them?
  13. What did you end up feeding your fry Dixon? I bought Wilson's leopards and found 2 'bubbas' ( ) today!
  14. I'm using about 2mg/L so 1 tablet treats 25L. There was a thread on here where someone had some prazi in a bottle (bought overseas specifically for fish) that gave directions for 2.5mg/L no more than once every 3-5 days (The net is all over the show with some recommending up to 4mg/L.) Have a read through this thread.. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/the-hu ... 22341.html There were some opinons on treatment with prazi with one of the recommendations being to dose every day for 3 consecutive days then leave it for a week, treating over 3 week period to kill anything that has hatched as the eggs stage of parasites are not affected by the meds. I've been dosing on 2 consecutive days with no problems and then a good gravel vac a week later. Then I leave them for a day and redose 2 days in a row. I'm still running treatments cause I suspected gill flukes which have eggs and my first week or treatment was in cold water where the eggs would have been dormant. I have upped the temp and am almost done now. 1 more treatment tonight then the wait to see if there are more symptoms! This refers to Droncit too: http://fish.mongabay.com/diseases.htm
  15. (Note to self : Always ask prospective tenants if they're fishkeepers before signing tenancy agreement!)
  16. I've been crushing the tablets to a fine powder, dissolving them in some water and then adding to the tank.
  17. Aiming to claim the record for the most tanks/fish in chch are ya?
  18. Does anyone buy fish from Redwood out of curiosity or are they out of the way for most of you? I haven't bought alot of fish personally.. but I've read bits on the net about what to look for before buying fish. They recommend scanning all the tanks and looking for dead fish, signs of stress or disease (like fish breathing too rapidly, fish being way too lethargic, scrathing/flashing etc, spots, etc etc...) If you're happy with what you see then you're probably ok. If there seem to be problems, there's a higher chance that your fish will be unwell. Animates runs specials I think is it tues/wed? 2 fish for the price of 3 I believe. This nomally makes them about the same price as they would be elsewhere!.. (ie: they're too expensive at their regular price). Organism obviously gets heaps of votes. They update their stock list on here very regularly in the commercial trade and exchange and can really help you out. Their gear is priced pretty well too!
  19. Have a look at the Jewel aquariums.. the filters are inbuilt (in a box in the corner) with the heater in there too... could give you some ideas.
  20. You'll be pleased to know nothing has changed then
  21. I recently bought some Droncit tablets from CRT (CRT is a farm supply store) these came in boxes of 50 tablets are 50mg tabs. of prazi. BUT.. I was in there again yesterday and most of what they had left was past its use by date. There may still have been a couple of good ones left. If you call, get them to open a box and check the date on the foil packs on the bottom right hand side. I went to the the Hornby shop but check the phonebook as there are others (03-344 4040 - 156 Waterloo Rd Hornby Christchurch) Your vet may be able to help with metro. I have also used Drontal super all wormer for DOGS (50mg's of prazi per tablet plus 2 other ingredients) from supermarkets on my fish with no ill effects BUT I believe some poeple have had some trouble. As with any meds I guess you have to watch closely and be prepared to do water changes. I keep a buck of freshwater next to the tank when I'm treating in case I need to net any of them out urgently.
  22. I'll probably get my new bore tested by ECAN (a full blown analysis) since it's our drinking water. Will be good to have a baseline. We're very aware of our water coming from an unconfined aquifer. It's the main reason I keep up with CCC/ECAN politics (as boring as that is!) Our area is coming undeer high demand from Industrial businesses who don't want to pay the price to set up in the right zones. Could spell disaster for the water supply really. There's also a groundwater monitoring well that's checked yearly by ECAN a few doors away from us so gives us a pretty good idea what ours might be doing. Were you in the quarry business Alan?
  23. Sorry!! I was just coming back to change that to swords! Thanks for correcting me. (java fern is the one that often gets attached to driftwood right? They tend to rot if you stick them in the substrate? I've never had either so I got them confused!!)
