  1. As I suspected. Thanks, No didnt cost me anything, I was just the last stop before disposing of it. Thought I would talk to the experts first.
  2. Hi Does anyone know of an adaptor that can be used on C02 tanks that were made overseas (Japan I think). All fittings seem slightly smaller than the tanks/regulators used in NZ. I dont know much about the units so thought I would ask here before heading down to a gas company. Cheers

    Melting?

I just got back from a few days away and my twisted val has completely disintegrated. It use to be one of the most prolific plants in my 70g tank and now all that is left is a big melted brown mess. I have been increasing my flourish dosage to rid the tank of thread algae but it seems I have killed the val in the process. All my other plants seem to be fine (fingers crossed). So i guess its off to the LFS tomorrow to replace the gaping hole at the middle back of the tank. Anyone got any good ideas of a plant that would do well here? Currently I have ambulia and rotala as my background plants.
  4. Hi Bulldogod I dont know much about Orandas myself but, if you havent already, go check out Patricks range at Goldfish pagoda over in Pakuranga. He has a wealth of knowledge and some excellent Goldfish. I am sure he will be able to answer all your questions
  5. I think they should be fine in that community. They are fun and pretty little fish. Good luck I had 10 long slender and fast Danios.... for a while. I made the mistake however of having them in with my 15cm Geophagus.... it wasnt long before all i had was 1 left! The only reason I think he didnt get eaten was he was so fat and almost trippled in size. I guess its that rule... If it can fit in its mouth it will probably eat it!

    Sand??

I used Silica Sand from placemakers which only cost about $10 and I only used half a bag for my planted tank. All waste just sits on the top and can be easily vacuumed. From what I gather there are heaps of different substrates out there all with their pro's and con's.... sometimes it just comes down to personal opinion!
  7. Hi Penguinleo, First of al full complements go out to you on tour wicked looking planted tank! My rotala macrandra (I just call it the red plant) is taking off better than any of my other plants in my discus set up. I have to prune once a week! Temp = 28 Ph = 6.2 Substrate = Daltons Aquatic Mix & Silica Sand C02 = 2 x Yeast mix Lighting = 2 x 54w T5HO Power Glo, 3 x 30w T8 Aquaglo I add about 10ml of Flourish every second day and 40ml of Nutrafin NPK once a week after an 80% water change. I havent been in the hobby long enough to be giving out advice but the one thing I have noticed in my brief but full on last 8 months since getting into the hobby is that one plant may do great in one tank but not so well in another. For example I had a smaller tank where my Indian fern flourished... put it in my larger set up (exactly the same parameters) and it died off completely. I guess every set up has its own balance! All the best and hope yours starts to take off. Great Job!!
  8. HI gatito.descarado Theres a business idea for you, maybe you could rent your clowns out. Charge by the hour!!
  9. Not quite sure of what the lil buggers are called but they seem to be quite common, brown, tiny and a circle shell. Not the cone like ones! Yeah I think both the snails and the loaches are getting it pretty sweet in this tank with all the constant feeding for the growing out discus. They have made it into the external filter so reproducing up a constant storm!
  10. Yes - Unfortunately having them in the tank with growing out Discus (where constant feeding is a priority) the DCL and Snails are probably getting well fed.
  11. My planted tank is starting to be overtaken by those really annoying little snails with the circly spiral shell. I do my best to remove as many as I can see when doing w/c's but they are cunning little things that come out to haunt me as soon as my maintenance is over. I have 2 x Young Dwarf Chain Loaches in the tank, as some literature and the LFS recommended. I dont really like the clown loaches (although everyone else I seem to talk to loves them) and thought the DCL were a small playful option. However I havent noticed them decimating the snail population... can anyone give me some assurance that they are (or at least maybe oneday) helping my cause. p.s Tried the iceberg lettuce overnight trick and not a single snail took the bait.
  12. Has anyone had success growing Glosso with Discus type water parameters? I am trying to form a carpet at the front of my tank, but the glosso is growing a lot slower than I thought it might take. A thin thread like algae seems to be winning at the floor level. Is this plant suited to a slightly lower temp? Discus are #1 priority however! Tank: 120x45x60 Temp: 29'C Ph: 6.2 Lighting: 2 x 54 T5HO Powerglo, 2 x 30w Aquaglo, 1 x 30w Arcadia Tropical C02: 2 x Nutrafin Yeast Mix Substrate: Daltons aquatic mix underneath a layer of Silica Sand Am i doing anything obviously wrong?
  13. Hi Ron, F1? First generation? What can I expect from this?
  14. Thanks everyone. I will keep up the aquaplus and wc's (doing 50% daily). Discus Guru - Melon and Snakeskin are doing good, cant wait for the Leopard SS colours to start coming out!
  15. Thanks Billaney, I saw your new setup as well and compliments go out to you as well. Im pretty new to the hobby and also discus (started out with Geo Suris) so pretty stoked with how the tank is looking so far. Im loving the fact I can actually keep plants with beautiful fish, the geos wouldn't have let me have some of the small ground cover plants that I have now!
  16. Yesterday while doing a daily water change, siphon and general clean I must have scared one of my turqs and caused it to run into something and scratch its head. As the photos can hopefully show, the discus has taken a small scrape of scales and skin off its head and I also noticed a small flesh-like spot on one of its fins... not quite sure what it is, any ideas? Will the fish heal alright in the tank? Do i need to treat with anything? I have been adding a little more Aquaplus with my Waterchanges than usual? Mod = Warren: Pictures removed as they have too big file size.
  17. Thanks. I have walked up and down many of the northland and east coast beaches trying to find the perfect piece. After a few attempts I just spent the $40 at the fish store and got the perfect piece.
  18. Heres a progress picture of my planted discus tank. Looking forward to introducing the t5 lighting this coming week. All plants are growing good (well im a bit of a rookie at this, so as good as I could hope for), apart from the Java fern on the drift wood. Any tips on how to get this to take off? At the moment I am only using a 1 x Yeast c02 mix and want to find out more about using controlled C02 with say a soda stream bottle. Does anyone know of a good thread or site with all ins and outs, costs etc 5th January 2007 11 February 2007
  19. Thanks AFRICAN! Yeah really like how its all turned out so far. Plants have been really getting established, especially the small grasses along the front. Hopefully the Glosso takes off a bit once I get the t5 lights onto them
  20. Heres a look at how the tank is coming along. New t5 lighting coming next week! http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q304 ... iscus8.jpg
  21. Hi Everyone Well thanks to everyones help on this forum and the DPH forum I have spent most of the weekend setting up my new tank. Thought I would include a few photos to show you how its coming along. Im sure theres is plenty more to learn along the way. My New 70G tank Adding the aquatic base and sand - looks like mash potatoes Levelling it all out Adding the water And the drifty 320 Litres later Plants, plants and more plants, where to start They can sense something is happening Cant wait to get the discus in their new home, will post more photos once the water settles and plants start growing
  22. Will definately be something I look into a couple of months down the track but at the moment the 30w are all I have access to.
  23. Been browsing through the forum reading up about aquarium substrate and am gettin awfully confused as everyone is recommending different things. Basically I want to keep around 7 discus in my new tank. 1200x450x600 (70 Gal) I am not trying to breed or grow outstanding large Discus as long as they are happy and show off their wicked colours! And I can get growth from a range of plants e.g. Grasses, some red plants and that awesome looking glosso carpet stuff (thanks Alanmin, p.s I might have to get some more) I will be using a Nutrafin C02 yeast kit and at the moment I have got 4 x 30w Arcadia white and pink tropical tubes (which gives me only 1.7W p/g) but will be upgrading to t5 lighting in a couple of months. From what I can gather off the forum I will lay around 1cm of sand, then 2-3cm of aquatic plant mix (with a bit of peat), and then finish off with 2-3cm of sand. I want to go for the creamy-white sand look and was thinking about either getting some from Palmers. Does this sound right? Any suggestions, Size or sand? I have been contemplating using substrate heating as I have read that sand restricts the Water Circulation in the tank but if this is unneccessary me and my wallet would glady go without. Thanks to everyones help, as a novice it is great to read up and get help from everyone on the forum. I will post some pictures once set up gets started this weekend.
  24. Thanks Reef, your set up is looking awesome. I want to go for the white sand look in my set up. What would be your advice in terms of plant base to put under the sand, and do you know of what type of sand I should be looking at getting and where.
