YES that is a LOT! The stream is unusual in national terms because of species found in it. A downstream gabion basket prevents exotics from entering the stream... I would say this site is of national significance!

The following species can be found in the Orokonui Stream: Short-fin eel, Anguilla australis Long-fin eel, Anguilla dieffenbachia Lamprey, Geotria australis Common bully, Gobiomorphus cotidianus Giant bully, Gobiomorphous gobioides Red-fin bully, Gobiomorphus huttoni Blue-gilled bully, Gobiomorphus hubbsi Inanga, Galaxias maculatus Koaro, Galaxias brevipinnis Banded kokopu, Galaxias fasciatus Giant kokopu, Galaxias argenteus Common smelt, Retropinna retropinna Koura, Paranephrops zelandicus

THey are good key indicators of over feeding. They help eat up left over food too. They only get out of control when conditions arent ideal in a tank. If tank conditions are great, you wont even notice them.
