  1. Hi guys, Still looking for some Riccia or Glossostigma to plant up a new tank. Can anybody help? Would really appreciate it. Regards Blueram
  2. Does anybody know of an good way to cut Cabomba stems from the mother plant? I know this is not rocket science, but when I try doing it the mother plant in my tank looks really awkward (like somebody has cut the top off it!!!) and does not fit in to the ‘untouched world’ world theme I am trying to create. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Blueram
  3. I agree with Caryl, The discus will not get along very well with breeding kribs and tiger barbs!! I found my pair of white sailfin mollies on the floor outside my tank yesterday. The must have been harassed by the breeding kribs. Life goes on. Ensure that you get the Bluerams from a good supplier, these nice fish seem to die for no reason. All thye best Blueram
  4. Thanks for the replies guys. Pies, Have the security staff wanted to X-ray the fish?? This can't be that good form them?? Thanks Blueram
  5. Hi all, I was wondering if you could help me with the following query. Has anybody transported live fish on a commerical flight within NZ, e.g. Air NZ or Qantas out of either Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch? I would have thought that you would need to hand carry them, but what about airport secuirty baggage screening? I'm sure X-raying the fish can't be good for them!! Any help will be appreciated. Regards Blueram
  6. Thanks for the prompt response team!!! Blueram
  7. Hi all, Just heading down to Christchurch for the weekend and was wondering if there are any pet shops in the city centre??? :-? :-? Regards Blueram

    CO2 levels

Matthew, Would not have a clue about when it will be safe. Haven't done all my research into CO2, but what type of method are you using to inject your CO2? Yeast and Sugar or have you gone high tech with a CO2 bottle?? How are the plants doing?? Have you put them in this set up??? Blueram
  9. All you have to do is ask at the meeting who is on the NZ Fishroom and what names they use. We normally get up to about 10 people and 6 if we aren't lucky!!!  Blueram
  10. Hi Matthew, I do attend the Auckland Fishkeepers Association meetings each month (I haven't been to the last 3). You should come along in August (second Tuesday as you stated). Blueram
  11. Kerry, Looks pretty good to me!!! Must feel quite rewarding to see your hard work come to fruition. Good work again!! Blueram
  12. Does anybody know of any Discus breeders in the Auckland Area? I just want to get some tips and possibly some fish in the future. Blueram
  13. Dennis, As Caryl said in one of her latest posts, the price of filters (especially Fluvals) vary from shop to shop. $280 for the 2224 from Hollywood in AKL was a good deal, without even using a fish club discount (wasn't a member back then!!!). The same filter with media at Jansens costs about $360 the last time I checked. When I was in Tuaranga for a holiday I did find the price of equipment quite steep!!! Blueram
  14. When I was upgrading my tanks two years ago, I also changed my internal filter to an external canister Fluval 204 (filter media included). It cost about $180. The only thing that didn't like about the Fluval was the flow rate and the difficulty in priming the filter. The self-priming function did not work very well!! Granted the distance between the tank and the filter outlet is about 70cm. I then went and bought an Eheim 2224 with Eheim media, that cost about $280. No problems priming and flow rate is excellent. I only clean the thing out once every 2-3months. I still use the Fluval on another tank with good results, but did anybody else have the same priming problems with their Fluvals? Blueram
  15. Richard, I to thought that Flowerhorns would not be brought in to the country. They are quite pretty given the multiple varieties that you can get. I know that people will say that they have been cross bred for their colours, but what is the difference between these fish and Discus and Goldfish that are bred in this manner also? All the best Blueram
  16. Thanks for the update Grant. I like the new photos on your web site. What are the dimensons of the tank you have? Your plant growth looks good. I'm getting married in a couple of months and the tank that I have must be moved, . It has taken me about 3 months to get it in the state that it is in and starting from scratch is not something I am looking forward to! All the best Blueram
  17. Hi guys, You might want to try three clown loaches as they are the best snail eaters I now, but they aren't cheap. They are such funny fish - worth every cent if you ask me. Regards Blueram
  18. Does anybody use DIY fertilisers for their tanks?? If so what recipes do you use and how successful are they?? Cost effective?? Regards Blueram

    CO2

Shilo, Thanks for the informative advice mate. I really appreciate it. AWASOME FILTER LINK!!!! My tanks have pretty good plant growth without CO2, but I am always looking to improve. Next time your over here at Jansens or Hollywood your more than welcome to come and take a look. Regards Blueram

    CO2

Has anybody purchased the new Nutrafin CO2 Natural Plant System. If so what are the results like? Is it cost effective?? I have read all about DIY CO2 systems at the Krib website and was wondering what results people have had with these on the forum? The problem that I have is that the water in Auckland is really soft and the usage of CO2 in soft water can be disastrous given the possible swings in ph. I really can't afford one of those high tech systems with ph sensors and pressurised CO2 canisters. Any comment would be welcome, but if there is anybody in the Auckland area with a DIY CO2 system running that moment that I could take a look at this would be appreciated. Regards Blueram

    Kribs

Hi all, I was wondering if anybody has had trouble with their Kribs in the past? I hadn’t seen my male Krib in the last week in my 100L planted cube. The tank also included a female Krib and about 30 male fry (1 inch). I finally found my male Krib (6 inches) dead beneath a couple of sword plants. I did have any problems with the pair when I bought them 6 months ago, but after raising their first batch of fry I moved them to my larger planted tank to see if they would breed again. They did but the male and female kept on fighting, so I decided to separate them, the second batch of fry were soon lost to all the other community fish in the second tank. I placed them back together in the original breeding tank and saw on aggression and thought that the third batch of fry were on their way. But that is when I found my dead male. Anybody have any ideas?? The funny thing is that the female is looks absolutely stunning at the moment. Here coloration in her belly is bright purple and gold in her dorsal fin is as bright as a flame angle!!!
  22. Hi Robyne, Sent you a private message about the plants you wanted, but did not get a reply. Are you still interested or not??? :-? :-? Regards Blueram
  23. Kriber, Yes it does seem that bloodworm is a love potion. Be careful to unfreeze the worms in a net before adding it to your tank. If not your water will foul up soon.  I haven't put rams and kribs together in a tank as all the rams that I have bought have died after a couple of months. I have purchased 6 rams in the past!!! The other problem with rams is that they only live for 2 years or so. I know a breeder in AKL and he has good stock, but I don't have the space at the moment. Take Care Blueram
  24. Kriber, It took me about 2 months before my kribs breed in thier breeding tank. I was feeding flake and boldworm which they really do enjoy!! Your in no rush are you? Breed the zd's and then try the kribs out.Blueram
  25. Kriber, Your right pH and hardness of the water does determine the sex of the fry. My fry are males and ph at the time of spawning the ph would have been between 6-6.5. The reason for the low ph is due to being in a heavily planted tank. Water here in Auckland is normally 7.2 and a low hardness (i.e. soft water) Hope this helps! Blueram
