  1. Yes I was aware of that, the tank is not just a goldfish bowl, its 155 litres.
  2. Thanks guys! I went to my LFS yesterday who kindly gave me a large polystyrene box with a lid. They said I could just bag the fish up and transport them in that. They also advised that I should remove plants and gravel from the tank as the base might break if I didn't remove them. Really don't want to have to do that but then again, it could be a good excuse to re-design the tank... but if I do that the fish will spend a lot more time bagged up than what I want then to. Hmmm... what to do
  3. I've got two Aqua One AR380's and an AR850. Had one of the AR380's for 3 years, never had problems with any of them and never had to change any bulbs. Haven't yet had to replace any broken or worn out equipment either.
  4. Thanks for the replys guys. Its now a done deal and we are moving the week/weekend before Christmas ! I did forget to mention that my tank is planted, not heavily but I don't want to go ripping up or destroying what I've got in there. I assume it would be ok to empty the tank of most of the water, perhaps leaving a cm or two in it for the plants. Hope it won't be to heavy to carry.
  5. I have the exact same tank as you and have managed to keep plants alive and well not in perfect condition but I'm still only a beginner. I have no idea what plants they are though, there are two types of tall growing ones, one with big leaves, the other with quite small leaves and the other plant is like a creeper type with long slender leaves, sorta looks like a flax bush? It has runners going out all over the bottom of the tank. Best advice I was ever given for planting is not to stick the new plant straight into the substrate. Let it sink to the bottom (if it has weights on it) and let it just sit there until you see thin roots start to grow, then you can plant it. Thats what I did last time and I haven't had to remove any dead plants yet.
  6. Thanks for the replies. Its not a done deal yet, but I'm just being super prepared, you know! Once the deal is done and everything is all go, moving day will be about 15-16 December... a week before christmas! Penejane, the house is in Otautau, I assume they have chlorinated water supply there, I didn't see a tank on the property. Will have to find out.
  7. We are possibly moving into a house of our own (fingers crossed!!) within the next two months and was wondering how on earth do you move fish and their tank? I did do a search on this as I'm sure people have asked this before but I couldn't find anything helpful. Can anyone point me in the right direction? What the best way to do it? Cheers Oh I should mention that this house is probably about 50 kms from where we are now.
  8. I don't know what else to do. Its either that or wait til the weekend, try to catch the little bugger and take him in to the LFS.
  9. Thank Caryl. Yeah, I guess its like that. I assume it is the one lump It doesn't look good, whatever it is. I visited my LFS after posting and asked them about it. They said without seeing they can't really identify what it is, they said it does sound like an infection or parasite. They suggested trying some melafix anyway, then if that doesn't work some furan. Off to set up a quarantine tank for the little guy (which I have been meaning to do for a while anyway)
  10. I had a big infestation of snails, I couldn't bring myself (or be bothered for that matter) to crush them, so I introduced 2 Zebra Loaches who, like the other loaches mentioned are known to eat snails, and within a couple of weeks the population of snails had dramatically decreased. There are a few survivors hanging around but I'm sure once they get below the waterline they will be lunch!
  11. Ok I'm going to try to describe this as best I can. The other day while gazing in to my tank I noticed one of my silvertips had a strange reddish/white lump type thing on his tail in front of the fin. As it turned, it was noticeable on the other side of his body as well in the same place. He seems to be swimming and eating happily and no other fish have any signs of this. There have been no deaths since setting up of the new tank several months ago. Last time new fish were added was about 3-4 weeks ago. Water parameters are fine, acceptable level nitrates, 0 nitrites, 0 ammonia. The tank is due for a water change which I'll be doing tonight. Any ideas what this "lump" might be?? Thanks
  12. Ahh well, best not to take the risk I guess. Thanks for your help!
  13. Yes thats them!! I did like them but read a few things about them, they can become more aggressive and less effective for eating algae as they age?
  14. They appear to be algae eaters. They suck on the side of the glass and stuff, but they're not shaped like a pleco
  15. My LFS has fish which they call Golden Sucking Cats. I want to find out more information about them, I assume they go by another name, but the people at the LFS don't know any other names for them. Anyone else know?? Cheers
  16. Thanks guys! Ottos are on my wishlist as I read they were good algae eaters and had lots of character, just a bit worried as I've also read they can be quite fragile when first introduced to a tank. Was thinking about bristlenoses too, but don't you have to add some drift wood for them as well?
  17. My little fellas certainly aren't shy! I have: 1 x Rainbow Shark 3 x Bronze Corys My avatar is a photo I took of one of the corys. I assume the "bronze" refers to their colour? Mine seem to have quite a blue/green colour to them, is that normal?
  18. Just looking at algae control options I seem to get a lot of green algae (and a little bit of brown algae) growing on the front bottom half of the tank, the tank is in our lounge, which gets quite a bit of sunlight. Which fish would be best for my tank? I have an AR850 150ish litres stocked as below.
  19. OMG What a gorgeous fish! He must be happy, looks like he's smiling
  20. OK i just did a search on the wandering snail and found this http://www.goldfishinfo.com/pests.htm It says the Wandering Snail produces a poisonous substance that may cause convulsions in fish??
  21. Yes, that looks more like it, although they are very small, so its kinda hard to see too much detail on their shells. Thanks!
  22. Yeah thats what I thought.. I can only hope that I got more females. I did tell the assistant to get the ones with less colour (the males go quite a brozny gold colour right?) at least two of my old ones had turned a bronzy/gold colour.. 1 in particular was almost orange, he's quite pretty, very bright and vibrant. The 3 new ones are VERY bland and pale in comparison to the old ones. So fingers crossed the new ones are female.. I guess time will tell.
  23. I don't mind them being there.. although if they multiply lots, that might be a different story. Checked out the malaysian snail, it doesn't look like that.
  24. We've recently acquired 3 snails from the LFS (on plants I assume). They are just little brown ones, not like the big yellow ones or the ramshorn ones I've seen. What are these little brown ones, do they have a name, are they going to breed, do they do good things for the tank??
  25. I wasn't planning on buying any more fish till my partner and I came back from holiday but I was a little concerned at the "attention" one of the silvertips was getting from the other two. They were chasing one and it looked quite stressed out so I thought I'd purchase 3 more silvertips to take the heat off the one being chased, which was in my plan anyways.. but then once at the LFS I couldn't resist getting some Bronze corys. I sure am glad I got those little fellas! My partner and I both spent the next 30 mins watching their antics after adding them to the tank. Two of them straight away started scuffling through the gravel while one sort of just clamped its fins and sat on the bottom. I was worried but 5 mins later it joined the other two exploring the tank. I knew they were active fish, but man these guys don't seem to stop!
