does the sun catch your tank? is it near a window? that can do it? there maybe certain times ofthe year when it`s directly shining on it...
Put some dark card or something around where the sun catches it...
If it isn`t, try putting willow sticks in the substrate, when they root, they absorb the algae out of the water...
saves messing with chemicals or upsetting water perameters...
just a thought..
PJ.
Just a note....
Chinese algae eater...fine when young...as they get older they get very territorial and agressive....had to move mine in with cichlids....wouldn`t recommend them...the siamese is much more placid....
ah yes...that`s why my two had to be confiscated by me...if you`d seen the dreadful condition their tank was in....All happy now, they even recognise me!! (sorry, hi-jacked thread....)
Right!! Tested out my blacklight in my tank.....
All you can actually see is the bacterial bloom...invisible in normal light..so although the fish dont glow, i can see how healthy my tanks are!!!
Cool!! ONE point.....NEVER TAKE BLACKLIGHT INTO THE KITCHEN UNLESS YOU`RE PREPARED TO GET THE BLEACH OUT AND SCRUB THE WHOLE DARN THING!!! EEEeeeeK..... bacteria does really glow in the dark...and i thought my kitchen was soooo clean!!!
Fungus is like cottonwool balls on fins and stuff....usually because of poor water quality....
Corys need to be kept in groups of 4 or more to keep them happy btw....
Treat them before adding to new tank....don`t know your meds...interpet do one...No8...
Your tank should`ve been cycling for longer than a few days...No fish should be added for quite a while...unless the tank was cloned from another one.....you need water testing kits too....
We all learn from our mistakes and i`ve made plenty...You need to look up or read about fishkeeping before setting up a tank really.....
Redness in gills caused by bacterial infection isn`t it?? Have you checked if there are any red streaks in the fins too?
Salt can be good for this...it cured two of my `rescue fish` I`m keeping them now.....
i`m having stew and dumplings for tea tonight, followed by treacle tart...mmm
Off to the `chippy` now for haddock, chips and mushy peas....with salt, vinegar and tomato sauce, washed down with Dandelion&Burdock pop!! mmmmm
Glassfish don`t like being on their own....3+ is better...I would isolate him in another tank if poss, until you can find out what`s wrong...
Guppies dying all the time....well, they like harder water, like mollies...maybe that`s why? Are you in a softwater area?
Tho` how big is your tank? ...
How many fish of each species are in it???
Have you tested the water?? some med affect the water perameters...
Also, some meds require extra aeration in the tank, as they can reduce the oxygen....
I`ve never upped the heating when treating whitespot, just kept going with meds until the tank apears absolutely clear...
Then used carbon in my filter to clean the water...
Suppose i must have been lucky...
Sorry for your losses...
PJ
Remember, Barbs can be real fin-nippers....
Neons, glowlights, harlequins...all fun fish, Corydorus (in groups of four or more)for the bottom and a Betta...would look grand in a planted tank...
I cloned my tank from one of my others...using their water and filter sponges...and some substrate....but only as i needed a spare tank for emergency rescue....
Do LFS not give advice anymore?? how were you allowed to buy fish? did you tell them you had just set it up?? Expect them all to die unfortunately....Then, do some serious reading about setting a tank up...
I hope all goes well and it`s never too late to learn how to keep fish properly...Lots of info on the web or at a library...
Somewhere in the middle of Britain! Half an hour from my house, i was born there!! I think you meant to say `in North Yorkshire` north east part of britain...just an hour down from you!! Sorry..off topic...just wanted to clear the vagueness up...!!
Sounds like Finrot due to poor water upkeep...you need a fungus/finrot
med...like interpet8...Also need extra aeration when using this product!
Goldies need to be in ponds or HUGE tanks...I have two in a 48"x12"x15"
and that is fully stocked...they grow to 10" or more if kept well, tho
` most are abused and poorly kept in too small a tank which stunts their
growth and causes early death..
