  1. So even with a powerful UV system I shouldn't consider my tank completely safe from disease?
  2. If you can afford the power bill, evaporation (therefore condensation) is almost non existent if your room temp is within 5deg of water temp. Unfortunately, my numbers havn't come up on lotto yet; so sweaty windows on cold Dunedin mornings is still the status quo. I'll have to check out more about DVS mentioned before. Do they cost much?
  3. I know someone whos budgie was killed by some drop-kick who blew smoke from a joint into its cage. Sounds like you have your tank under control. You could add 'cycle' to replace the good stuff the frequent water changes are removing. Another good idea would be to put bourbon and cola into the petrol tank of that guy's car.
  4. Hi there. I don't know if I'll be much help to you but I have some large Oranda and would be gutted also if I had to flush one. If your fish is bloated it could have dropsy... but then you only just got it so you wont have a size reference. Hopefully (?) it is just supperficial damage caused by the fish thrashing in a course net when you bought it. If so, add malifix to reduce chances of infection. I will keep an eye on this thread to see what others suggest. Good luck
  5. I've had success placing the sides on top of the base with the two ends placed inside the front and back pane. I also clean the surface to be siliconed with acetone or methylated spirits on a paper towel. 24hrs after assembling (some wait 48hrs) I filled it up and let it sit for another 24hrs, periodically checking for leaks - Its a good idea to do this outside. I made a 2000x100x70cm tank this way. When I returned from a weekend away I was greeted by my fish flapping in 5mm of water; the bottom cracked, the seals held.
  6. I'm planning to have multiple tropical fresh water tanks sharing one large sump filter. As a security measure I'm considering installing a Ozone or UV sterilizer. As far as I can tell they seem to do the same thing. Does anyone feel one is better than the other re: cost, maintenance, efficiency?
