Cheers guys, we usually stop in at redwood...
will have to see if we can make a detour to organism... I think I've been there before, I gave them a Fangs puffer...
-
Sorry Caryl.... I missed the subtlety there. could yoy make it more understandable for us country folk?
-
I understand my old haunt (stanmore road) is fubar,
I'm being dragged into town tomorrow, and seeing I have my new HID lighing in place I might was well get some new fish concidering the last time I bought some was 4 years ago and my kids have slowly watched their carcases get eaten by the plec... stil have 2 glowlights and one black tetra, and of course the cory & 2 out of area koolies...
Just after some amazon smallies - where's the best place to get some glowlights etc??
-
Aaah so you still need a controller - I was hoping just to tie the lines to the battery and give it a few amps....
Cheers for your help!
-
Hmm, I'll break out the multimeter & do some testing... Is there any advantage combining all the black (-ve) wires together and all the red +5v into another and the +12v into another bundle?
OT: Also I've never thought of using the PSU to charge batteries, I have a couple of old UPS batteries that need a charge and my normal charger is dead. How do you hook it up?
-
That's another advantage of the HID, the ballast works from 8-35 volts! Good idea about the +5v, I'll see if I can find a 120mm 12 volt fan that will start up at 5v, they still move a fair bit of air but run quieter.
-
Cheers Ira - Good to know the PSu can supply the grunt.
I'm talking about HID, High Energy Discharge - essentially a miniature gas vapour system... 23kv to strike then once the arc is running very efficient.
Also they can crank along up to 80-90 lument/watt

My cunning plan was to go from Fluorescent to LED lighting - my maths were the price difference vs energy consumption vs heat utilisation etc..
So I got a 200 + lumen led strip from China as a test.. it does okay as a low light but for the price ($30 or so), wasnt delivering what I wanted. I had plans to slowly buy a whole grid without shewho noticing the packages
I had been interested in HID but the price commitment was higher than I can afford as a test, but a mate just gave me one to test and the results are amazing!
I'm just using a 6000k one, hooked up to a computer PSU but have a couple of questions...
1. The tank cover is about 3" high, and heat is an issue so I have a PSU fan running and that's keeping temps at an acceptable level, but the heat is radiated... hard to explain but it "feels" like a high UV source?
2. I'm just using a single line off the power supply - is that enough to to properly run a 35w HID?
3. Over winter, would it be possible to bleed the excess heat off the ballast to heat the tank as well?
Cheers in advance - and apologies if this has been thrashed to death before, I did a search but didnt see anything.

WoW
Now Sam... rolling you eyes at someone, alongside the comment Wow - as far as I'm concerned it the equivalent of Meh.. you are rude.
Fishben went to a lot of effort pressing PrtScr, then uploading his pic to inageshack, and I dont think Melanie started this thread to boost your ego.

OS is xubuntu 10.4 linux
LOOKOUT He's a hacker!!

You must have a seriously grubby mind......
But that's reasonably tidy

I'm a strict believer of clean desk, clean mind..

I guess in a tank It's a bit hard to hide...
Nice to know the octopii did tame up a little.. They were on the root of the kelp so I couldnt guess if they were juveniles or older ones.. buy dying within a couple of days hints on environmental..
Good effort anyway WEKA.
-
240 watts @ 12 volts would be a bit of an overkill wouldnt it?
-
That's a shame, but yeah they definately have short lifespans from what I have read... that's another reason I dont really want them as pest..
Were they very active, did you see much of them?
-
LOL how much for a transformer, 20 metres of cable and 10 years of current draw @ 240v 1 amp?
I've toyed with solar plans before, but at the moment, it's just too expensive.
-
Any update at all there WEKA, Do you still have them? My 5 year old was asking about them the other day, he loved having them around and just got a book from the library about octo's!
-
Thats great to hear WEKA - I was wondering how they were getting on. The kids would love to see photos I'm sure!
If no-one has helped you with the pics, I can do them for you after work tonight!
-
Thanks for taking them Weka - if you hadnt I'm sure it would have ended up with me trying to make up a salty tank just for them.. I think I'll try some simpler animals first.
The kids would love a photo if/when they come out.... it was a great experience for them to watch the octopussys explore the little tank they were in. Have they eaten yet?
-
The octopii have hopefully by now been rehoused - they were fascinating to watch, swimming, crawling and changing colour/shape. Wish we could have kept them - and will start researching what's needed to keep them happy.
LOL at the pump - it's brilliant, no noise and very little maintenance, never seen another like it tho - and I'm embarrassed by how much I paid for it :-?
-
PM sent..
-
He's the red blob in the corner...
And caught him out for a walk..
The more I see them, the more I want to keep them, recon they could handle a bit of fresh water as/if I convert my freshie tank?
Do salt water tanks have any more specific requirements than a water pump and a hundred litres of water?
@carzncats - good idea, but I'm out of town now... cant really pop in after work.
-
Thanks guys, - man they look like they would be great pets - but a 10 litre tank LOL nah and I like my amazons... well do I?
If anyone wants to pick them up from Nth Canty tomorrow - would save them from being seagull tucker!

We stopped in @ organism... wow what a selection for such a small shop!
Loved the Bichirs, and they nearly sold the missus a clown.... but he was a little too old (I like em with stripes)..
Now have some more movement in the tank.. and a reasonable price...
Cheers guys!
