PowerGlo are commonly stocked in most fish stores. Price isn't as friendly as the wholesaler daylight tubes but I will say I do like them, got one for my Jebo, looks fabulous!

Yep. Straight away, just remember partial water changes immediately if you see fish having trouble breathing or looking unnaturally lethargic, also keep feeding low. Your water is rainwater from the roof right? or is it local supply? Sorry I wasn't able to visit last time I was up, but we're moving to Hamilton in 3 weeks, so will be around to help out in the future if needed.

If you mean the tiny black dots I think that's normal? My silver angels have a couple anyway.

And you get official certificates for the breed/rebreed and pins after certain numbers.

I actually find its my plecos that do all the poo. They're little poop machines. But good filtration, and weekly gravel vacs, not a problem. If they're super-poopers you may want to look at what you're feeding them. We've got 5 oscars, 3 adult severums, and 2 plecs in a 650L tank, no poop problems, you get the occasional floater from the plecos but never had a problem with oscar poop?? Oscars the big problem seems to be keeping the food in their mouth. I wouldn't recommend an undergravel filter for a heavy load tank like that. We use a single external filter (1200L/hr) and two internals pumping 1000 each for extra flow. Undergravels are great until that one day where they clog up and stop flowing and you have a bit of a bacterial disaster going on (Note a problem for small tanks with clean fish)

Unless you replace the carbon every 30 days, you're better off without it. As Caryl said, throw them out and get some bio noodles or even foam inserts, will be a lot more beneficial to your tank. If you want clear water, I use filter wool, well actually I use the inside of an old pillow, but 'filter wool' sounds like a better term

Best deals I've found have been at fish club meetings. I've bought more than one dual 3ft for under $40 with bulbs. Failing that next cheapest would be trademe, and then I'd be looking for new items at your local pet store there in wainui (if they stock them), Hutt Pets, and SwitchedOnGardner. SOG is probably the cheapest, they do the AquaOne range. Hutt Pets has BigBoy etc.

Nope that's a different type of green water. I used some liquid fert ('Fish Emulsion') and put a few drops in a 80 litre rubbish bin, went green within a day or two and I thought 'woohoo' put some dapnia in, but they all died, then I learned about the difference between water that is green, and green-water. Shame really because my dapnia cultures eat more lettuce than we do.
-
Short Answer: No Longer Answer: Hell no! Trouble is liquid ferts contain nitrates/phosphates which WILL (not may) cause an algae bloom and the tank will end up solid green (I tested it, its true!). I recommend Daltons Aquatic Mix, it goes underneath the gravel and is $9.99 for 10kg and you dont need much of it (make sure not to stir it up in the water though). Plants LOVE it, normally slow growing hairgrass is like a weed in my tank now.

I have a gorgeous breeding pair here and about 20-30 offspring but they're taking SOOooo long to grow, been 2 months or so and still not what I'd consider sellable Think they might still be on the 'Fish Lists', would be worth a look.

Sorry Alan.

When does the WAS meet? I know Sundays at 6, just not sure which Sundays. We're shifting up to Hamilton mid-May and would like to join up. Also got some breedings that'll need to be certified in Hamilton because they wont be old enough when we move (fingers crossed with that one  ).

Is the filter an AquaOne? I keep hearing 'AquaOne' and 'cracked tap', so just want to know if this is another occurance?
-
BGK is from the amazon, I think david might be mixed up with the other knife fish species e.g. clown knife. I also hear that as the BGK gets older they start getting picky about food, only wanting live fish etc? Never had one, just what I'd heard, but sounds like you've done all your research anywho

As far as I know the JBL PlecoChips are the only ones to contain wood, you'd have to read the packaging to be sure. BN really need a little bit of wood. Only needs to be a small peice so it shouldn't be any trouble. If you get BN get a bunch of young ones, they're crazy little workers and when they're of age they'll breed without assistance. I haven't found a fish that eats algae like a BN does. SAEs are awesome at keeping thread algae away. Older/Bigger they get the lazier the get, same with the BN, if they're not growing then they dont need as much food. At the moment stores are getting in 'Flying Fox' but they're actually SAEs (which is good!).

Most probably because he was being a smarty-pants

Note however that neons etc only school when frightened/uncomfortable. Once they've settled in the aquarium they tend to spread out. I noticed some interesting behaviour too once settled including males fighting (I had 2 males on one side of the tank, and 3 on the other, if they mixed there was trouble, no damage though), and breeding when rain-water was added.

Uses UV-C rays to acheive lots of little advantages, breaks up nutrients, kills some bacteria, kills water born algae. None are necessary but if I had one spare I'd certainly have it on one of my tanks! Higher wattage UV bulbs are more effective at bacteria killing. Most common use is on outdoor ponds to stop the water going green when there is high nitrates etc hard to do a water change on an outdoor pond.

How long can a clown loach last in a filter hose?
SpidersWeb replied to farmchick's topic in Freshwater
 Tell the bf to add 'intake strainer' to your birthday wishlist!! Congrats to Lucky the Loach  Should be in the guiness book of fish records or something. Most interesting thing I found in my filter was pond snails which is kind of like playing lotto for 20 years and winning $5. Clown loach is more of a jackpot -
Clown Loaches are awesome Takes a few weeks for them to get used to you though, so dont be discouraged by them hiding all the time if they do. They will take a damn long time to outgrow a 400L My six are in a 150L tank with a breeding pair of angels and kribensis. They like to squeeze themselves in to things, you'd be amazed at what they'll fit in to. Can't over-filter, so if you have a spare go for it If you're stretched for filters, then I wouldn't be too worried about leaving the 2028 to do its job alone. We've got a few underfiltered tanks here that are ok as long as we do a 20-30% weekly water change.

Hey dude, just want to make sure you know that common plecs get huge (mine is about 40cm) and they'll rip plants to bits by sucking on the stems/leaves and stripping them. Bristlenose are a lot more plant friendly. But as for your question, I know they're not 'amazon' but I kind of like a few (4 or 5) danios of any kind darting around. Keeps the angels occupied and they're way too quick to get bitten. They're also normally greyish in colour, so doesn't look out of place. Another option is dwarf cichlids, I especially recommend Apistogramma Agasezii (spelling?) which we've bred here. The female turns bright yellow (when in breeding mode) and the male has long orange fins, they're great parents too, and a joy to watch. Not sure how they'd go with a BGK because I've never had a ghost knife before.
-
I did a quick hunt and the 2228 was replaced by the newer 2028, however they both have the same flow rate 1050L/hr. I'd say that'd be around the minimum for a 400L tank, would depend on tank load etc and what media you have in the Eheim.

Quite often this is actually because most people haven't seen a female. Normally the importers only bring in males but the occasional female slips in. I haven't bred them before, so unfortunately I dont know how to encourage the male to build a nest but I'd take a guess at: - Raise temp to 28C ish - Replace 33% of tank water with rain water or aged fresh water. That makes most species get their funk on. Also live foods like Dapnia or mosquito larvae. A trick I read elsewhere was to use a poly cup cut in half and stuck to the side of the aquarium to give him somewhere to build the nest.
