20 KG of rock is not that much I wouldn't think. I have many rocks weighing over 10kg ea. I suspect you will want at least 20kg, others with smaller tanks will know better. I think IRA said he had 60kg in his 4 footer? I know I had over 100kg in my 5 footer. Not sure man, trial and error, but best get saving. Rock is the single most important part of the tank. Pie

Misnoma - I have brought mine from Microline, they come in 2 sorts, 1 '6 months' and 1 '12 months'. I always buy the 12 month one, because i'm lazy. I have also seen them an Bunnings but they were much more expensive (been at least 18 months since I looked at Microline though). Pie

Not sure, I would say about $60.00 for the canister, and $10 for the 1 micon and $22 for the 1/2 micron w/carbon. so thats $150.00 + say $10 in plumbing, and another $40 if you need a saddle valve. Add the RO/DI later. I will have a very simple DI filer, semi DIY, you can have for say $20.00 to get you going. But you will have to feed media into it, but we have a source of DI resin. an RO unit will prob cost $300+. Pie

Good man, get rid of those freshwater tanks and welcome to the dark side. Bulb replacement for me? Hrmmm $125ea x5 every 9 months + say $40ea x4 for T5 bules every 9 months. You can work it out, just don't tell me. 4 foot is good. Still if you have a larger freshwater, use it, use the 4 footer for the sump. W00t your there. Hrmmmm, I don't know how to answer that. If money is no object then yes, why not. I would certanly get myself a 1micron and 1/2micron carbon block filter. You could add RO or DI or both later if you decided it was nessessary. DI is cheaper than RO, but they do slightly different things, and the DI media will be used up much faster if its inline with a RO unit. Pie

Its not a case of if RO/DI water is nessessary, its more a case of is water quality of concern in your tank. Qualify water, quality way of life for your animals. There are people not using RO/DI who are doing fine as far as I am aware. To me, its just another variable I don't have to contend with. Got hair algae? Hows your water. Got Diatoms? Hows your water. Got RTN. Hows your water. Got colour? Hows your water. If you water filter saves one fish and 3 corals over a 5 year period its not too far off having paid for itself. Pie

Yah stick with Fluros for now, new T5 or old T8s. Buy new bulbs. this is the thing with the hobby i've seen a few people fail with. The money that is. For example 2 T5s and 2 MHs on a tank. Your looking a bulb replacement costs of over $350.00 a year, EVERY year, FOREVER. On top of everything else thats happening, you are going to HAVE to spend at least that much every year on bulbs alone... Keep it simple, see how you go. Keep ya eye on the 2nd hand bits and pieces and grab it when a good deal comes up (Sea Swirls turn up 2nd hand from time 2 time, as do pumps, skimmers and just about anything else). Go big as poss on the tank too, and the sump. Size counts Can't afford it? Sell ALL your freshwater stuff, chances are you will NEVER want anything to do with it again after the marines Pie

I went wrong? Well there was the tank didn't fit through the door so had to use a crane thing... Bah Plan. In fact plan to spend lots of money. Then plan more. Then take the spending plan and double it. Then plan to tell yourself 'last $100 for the tank' about 3x a month... good luck ants, read those 2 post through, there is some good stuff hidden in them and most of your questions will be answered. Chimera - Thats why I use 802.11a at home. Lots of stuff uses the 2.4, inclduing Microwaves, garage door openers, xbox wireless controllers, DECT phones (often sold with 300m range, so there are a lot of phones about). Piezola.

The debundelled service in latency is about 30ms worse. I'm not endorsing Telecom, just saying, the debundelled service is shite if your worried about latency by comparison. Its the difference between 30-40 and 70-90. Latency is more important to me, than bandwith. There are other ways to get DSL not from Telecom, and not be on the unbundled service. As for bandwith, most people are on 2mb or less, and the DSLAMS provide more than 2mb per PVC when fully subscribed, so its not a problem unless you are one of the rare customers that has more than 2mb DSL in a DSLAM with multiple 2mb+ subscribers all using more than 2mb of traffic at the same time.
