  1. Maybe something like this? http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/what-c ... 34079.html Seems there might be some issues with the cardinals recently imported...

Have had them have their tails chewed down before and had them mostly grow back, haven't seen one grow back exactly the same though always shorter.. And had a dem that had the tail bitten right off and it was tailless for the 2 months I had it seperate and went back into my tank with no tail. In that case there was nothing left to regrow it was chewed off right down to the body. I think it depends how badly the tail is gone and if there is any fin to grow back at all from the first description the tail had been eaten off. It now it sounds like fin rot which is fixable with some chance of some tail regrowing. Hopefully doch will keep us updated with how things progress
  3. Hi and welcome Congrats on your decision.. From what ive read on here the bigger the better for marine tanks they're more stable.. I hope you've got some serious $$'s to burn as thats another thing that ive read is you have to buy descent gear to begin with and marine fish corals proper lights etc aren't cheap Ask any of the marine guys what their tanks and stock owe them and then ask someone who has fresh water.. Well worth it to have an amazing setup in your house to be proud of. Make sure you do your research and it would be awesome if you knew someone else locally who has success with marines and followed their advice, maybe join a club?

If its fin rot and its still there you need to remove him/her and treat it.. Drop meth blue directly onto it over a bucket or something (it stains so be careful). From there you can add it back to your big tank you run the risk of it being beaten up again but you don't have to rearrange all your rocks like you would if you took it out to another tank... Or you can take it out to its own tank get it healthy and try and reintroduce it, but you will have to rearrange your tank and probably introduce it at night so it has a chance.
  5. That sucks that people can sell fish like that I hope you got those fish cheap I think that your better to take the risk that your filter bacteria gets killed and do some more water changes etc than have your fish die..

    Worst find

Glad some of the fry survived at least its some sort of bonus.. When I kept my male and female together he ate most the fry too so as soon as they breed he's out now. I have never seen a cockatoo attempt anything like that who knows what happened?

    Worst find

Gutted man Is it like what it looks like and the male attempted to eat the female and choked?
  8. Man those photos are awesome You must be very good with your camera those fish don't hang around and pose..

I can't see any of them actually chewing their tails off.. Are they male or female fish? Big or small? Do you still have babies surviving in the tank? Have you noticed any of the big ones being overly agro? I suspect that your biggest male or 2 are being overly aggressive and injuring smaller males causing fin rot and that is the cause. I have found in my tank I have 6-7 males once they matured and slowly 3 of them have taken over places in the tank and killed off all the rest. It still works with the reduced numbers because they don't kill of the remaining females. 300L should be ample room for them. Don't bother putting him in his own tank if they tail is gone it wont ever grow back, I have a tail less one in my big tank that gets along just fine.
  10. lol Si glad someone else feels my pain Its all fun and games though, I think the photo makes me look more white than I am.. I'm hoping that my pasty whiteness and sun avoidance will mean im less likely to get cancer later in life.. Dave+amy I am unsure about the coral and fishes temperature tolerances.. We waded through rockpools with corals and fish in them when the tide was right out and they were uncomfortably hot (40ish) so take it the corals etc are quite hardy? It was an amazing experience I don't know why I didn't do it in new caledonia when I had the chance.. Instead I went to the aquarium and saw them all and stayed dry Have posted some pics of that in saltwater too.
  11. If your ring around being confident and knowing exactly what you want what you want it for the dosage rates etc then it helps convince them you know what your doing Preferably find a vet that knows nothing about treating fish and is happy to prescribe you what you want..
  12. lol Those lori's are messy little time consuming buggers We probably still have some wetmix unless it got chucked remind me or Steph next time your out.. Congrats on your oldest moving out.. Do you think he will be back? Or will it be a case of him having to live around the fish tanks if he does
  13. From what ive read the best thing is to keep discus in bare bottomed tanks to keep things clean and ensure they aren't stunted at all? Also they do better in larger groups unless you have a pair 2 don't usually get on all that well. Regarding the ph as long as you aclimitized them and had the big tank fully cycled (or moved filters as well) they should be alright.
  14. Don't use the cat wormer it is mostly other crap (thats bad for your fish) and a small part prazi. Furan 2 is no good for worms because its an antibiotic. Id probably drop the water level as low as possible (use less drugs) and use the droncit (which is just a tablet form of the prazi). I think if you search for droncit etc on here the dosing rates are all layed out? Hopefully someone who knows discus can add some more
  15. I can't offer any help with the paint. But will just say it sounds like a cool idea would be cool to see a scale realistic looking model in a fish tank Make sure you post some pics as you go.
  16. I'm pretty sure that is what my mate has that took the photo's in the thread that I posted.. The price is higher than the other options though..
  17. Check in private trade and exchange on this forum I think someone advertised some recently $50ea.
  18. the photos aren't mine but they're cool just thoguht I should share what it is really like down there. lol yeah photoshop is awesome aye that photo cracked me up so had to share it. Yep thats me pasty white theres only a couple of us that aren't tanned over here.. I just end up being 1 of 2 colours pasty white or angry red and peeling so stay out of the sun! lol Don't worry I get heaps about it.

    Dwarf Cichlids

Bristlenoses should be ok but there is always the risk. IMO your tank is too small to attempt to breed both species in, try one type at a time, I probably wouldn't consider 2 types in anything smaller than a small 3ft.

    Dwarf Cichlids

How big is your tank? Maybe your nice flat rocks at one end for the flags and some caves at the other end for the cockatoo's and some plants inbetween? For cockatoo's I used film canasters (the males do outgrow them) and small terrocotta pots around the same size.. Bilbo uses half coconut shells with holes drilled in them. The advantage I find with the ones I use its its very easy to remove eggs and female because it holds water and she just stays in there. Moving the bristlenoses shouldn't upset them too much but bristlenoses are random breedings.. They breed strong for ages nothing changes then they stop for ages. If the male has a fav ornament or anything then move that with him it will help.
  21. Good pic.. doch it should be fairly obvious when your dem's are holding they will have the big bulge and also be hiding/not eating alot.. heres a pic However I will caution you on trying to attempt stripping demasoni, they are very hard to strip and very easy to damage the females in the process..

    Dwarf Cichlids

With the cockatoo's just leave them alone and let them settled feed them up and wait for them to breed.. I remove the female and the egg's let her raise them by herself. With the dwarf flags probably easier to put them in their own tank, you could do the cockatoo's and flags in the same tank depending on its size.. I would try and stick all the things you want them to spawn on/in at either end to encourage them to have half the tank each. I have found when keeping 2 pairs in the same tank sometimes they spawn at the same time. You don't want them both trying to breed close to each other and scrapping each other out male cockatoo's can get grumpy.
  23. I just posted a thread on here with some pic's one of my mates took with an underwater camera when we were snorkling.. Those photos were taken with a olympus that he had just brought.. It seems they are very hard to take I guess what you end up doing depends on how much you want to spend? The olympus seemed to be a very good camera was fully waterproof (but not very deep from memory) and compact and also took good photos out of the water..
  24. Last weekend we went to the beach and took some snorkling gear one of my friends took his new camera and these are some of the photos that he took... This is just off a random beach and reefs like this seem to surround Timor was awesome to see.. I was very lucky to avoid this shark..
