  1. Oh you poor bastard!!!
  2. Has anybody actually met layton in real life? He could just be someone's alter-ego...or someone who is in circumstances too horrible to imagine...or just someone who loves to wind people up.
  3. What do you intend to do to save it? :-?
  4. I agree! Holy moly!!! Three posts in a row where reefers agree on something! Yup, gotta stick to 'only bad things happen fast' mantra so will decrease vodka until it aids the process at the right level. If cyano is a bacteria - would the vodka actually assist its reproduction as well as the other 'good' bacteria? Or are we relying on the cyano being immobile and all the waterborne bacteria taking it up first?
  5. Now just to throw a spanner in the works, a cat amongst the pigeons, more random speculation amongst reefers....I have been dosing vodka now for about 4 months. I had some nuisance browny slimey wispy algae (not sure what that would be in latin) I used the usual 1ml per 100l split into two doses a day. It seemed to clean everything up except a few bits that kept a foothold through some zooanthids. As per usual in reefing the result was two edged - some LPSs seemed to flourish more, some of my 'originals' seemed to keep more retracted. I noticed a slight loss of colour around the edges of some my SPSs (in my relatively high nutrient tank there was always plenty of colour but 'dull'). I stopped dosing vodka 3 days ago and the LPS corals I was worried about are expanding more... :-? What do I like more...or less...
  6. If it was from Petworld it was 'little' alright!!!  Should be easy to tell if it gets a whitespot though - it'll list to one side!!!
  7. How much was it?
  8. Yeah Reef, you are probably on the right track. (thought you would need endorsement from me    ) Many parasitic-type critters only make themselves known in an obvious clinical way when the host is not in great condition with low immunity. Guess its the balance in ecosystems thing again.

    Firefish shoal

You've probably kept a fish or two together judging by the number of stars your avatar has got...yours is likely to be a pretty good 'guess' then!
  10. Anybody know (or have a best guess ) as to whether you can keep a 'shoal' of firefish eg purple firefish together. Maybe 4-5? Seems to be conflicting advice where I have looked...would they 'shoal' or just spread throughout a tank staking out their own territory in the substrate/rockwork? :-? :-? Probably need a fairly big tank either way...

    Crabs

Your crabs are big enough to throw on the barbie aren't they????
  12. Nah, not to my understanding anyways. Joe's juice, kalk paste, and the like work by high alkalinity nuking the anemone. Calcium will just give it stronger glass...
  13. Nitrogen being emitted from anaerobic bacteria breaking down nitrates? :-?
  14. "Chimera's needs help" Geez Fay, saying that to a reefer is like telling a bloke he needs to use viagra!

    phosphates

I just wanna have a tank with pretty coloured fishies and things in it...!
  16. Since UV units kill bacteria passing through them would they defeat the purpose of trying to cultivate 'good' bacteria through practices like adding vodka and bacteria cultures? :-?
  17. What did you see happening when you did fay? :-? :-? (So I can keep an eye out for those signs)

    Pink monti frags

C'mon wasp - how many times have I told you to stop scuba diving in your tank!

    RDSB

Without any scientific rationale for such thoughts.... ...I would think there is no such thing as a 'safe level'. Concepts like 'homeostasis' will kick in to try to 'adjust' to whatever we do to our tanks before 'chaos' has a turn. Use your eyeometer - watch what's happening in your tank... I have had a bit of algae and have increased my dosing of vodka (twice a day) to TOTAL about 1.5 mls per 100l. Other than the fish regularly having break dancing competitions, no harmful effects but a decline in algae.
  20. It still intrigues a mere mortal like me that you can cook rock in a tank for 3 months (even with a bit of light), put the stuff in your display tank under pretty lights, and the b"**%* stuff decides to host all sorts of crap stuff! The wonders of nature I suppose...

    Crabs

You can buy cream to rub on and kill crabs can't you?? Stock any Steve???
  22. One of the biggest dangers of using the less 'pure' stuff is not so much relatively harmless diatom/algae outbreaks but toxicity through excess trace elements such as mercury and arsenic. Even the better grade stuff has these elements but hopefully at a harmless level.
  23. Our tank one year on. 4ft (around 400 litre?) bow front. I'm really looking forward to our upgrade so I don't have to crowd all the corals under the single 150w halide. Its sorta like a family of 8 midwinter in Invercargill crowding around a single bar heater to keep warm!
