  1. I live in Christchurch NZ, both species are found in aus too I think, at least in the south east, tasmania area. Yeah my tank is gonna be designed for the octo only, (possibly fish , maybe a sea urchin and some star fish, possibly brittle stars). Basicially not anything I would care about being eaten. It would be great to have a few more live things in there. They have 3 hearts so apparently they make roughly 3 times the amount of waste a fish of similar mass would create.
  2. p. Condiformis o. Warringa It states in the book that o. Warringa has only recently been discovered, and that its diet is unknown, so that might make an interesting pet
  3. Thanks chimera, but I think its a bit under what I'm looking for.
  4. Hey I thought I might update on how my systems going. At the mo I have the tank, my 90L diy sump (with refugium) with 3000lph weipro 2014 skimmer. And the pvc parts necessary for plumbing. Still need to get the tank drilled and need a bulkhead. I found the most likely octopus I will be able to keep, is the club pigmy octopus, called octopus Warringa. I plan on making a trap out of coke cans, all on a fishing line and sink them. I'll just leave them for a week and will hopefully have some inhabitants when I pull them up. There is no info on the net about this species, although I have one book with one page on it and a photo, ill try to copy it in. Or I might get a small O. maorum, now called pinnoctopus Condifrmis. Problem is this will get very big, 2m armspan. Ill cross this when I get to it. I have been offered a pump by jetski steve which I'm considering.....
  5. Yeah, its going ok, got some problems tho, ill type up how its going on my other thread so I dont double post. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/return-pump-strength-and-getting-tank-re-siliconed-vt9510.html
  6. What about copper? Im geussing this would leech or something? maybe make your water green. It would kill my octo at least, a copper spring in a 30,000 litre tank killed an octopus in a dunedin aquarium. what about glass? (im thinking of the tubes they use for distilling)
  7. Whats wrong with my spelling? Granted I spell some things wrong, my computer doesn't have a spell checker, but I always try to have legible posts. I have just discovered spellcheck.net so I should be better in the future, my grandma always complains about poor spelling skills in the education system. I only posted for informations sake, chimera I wasnt being condascending (I could have worded it better) I was just saying that the perfect measurement is an average from a population. My stats class (that I failed incidentally) spent a lecture on it. And for the record attacking creationism isn't an attack on christians. I have a lot of christian friends who hate it as much as me. Sorry if I'm a bit blunt, I sat through a ridiculous seminar the other day with some people who were trying to get creationism taught at uni. :-? Anyway, back on topic would you use the ratio for the whole tank? As in the width aswell? How far are your tanks off the ratio? And how much actually makes a difference, ie would 2 cm's either side be enough to notice?
  8. I was also stoked to find that after futher measurements, a nautalis shell is not of the golden ratio, even though it was a bit of a poster boy example of phi. And on a similar note, there is a LOT of rounding that goes on with examples in nature. Ive seen somewhere a comparison of exact (as exact as possible) measurements with what was claimed to be phi in wildlife examples and there were huge discrepencies, often over .2 of a decimal place. The good old "science" of throwing your dart first and drawing the bullseye around it. The corner stone of creationism.
  9. If you made a tank with the golden ratio, it would still be a rectangle, but the most asthecticially pleasing rectangle. Also this is the optimum as defind by the population as a whole, an average optimum, so it isnt everyones cup of tea. Perhaps one could start with some cut out rectangles based on the golden ratio, and progressivly make them less perfect,(use 1 standard deviation each time) and pick their own choice. Good old normal distribution. I wouldn't be surprised if most tanks are near this anyway, its the most common rectangle we see probably as marketing people are very aware of small things like this to help product promotion. I think the hype is in putting to much weight in something that doesnt actully further science. It is very useful for finding measurements like the perfect woman ect and explaining attractive rectangles , but loads of people list where the golden ratio is found in nature, purely observational, which in my opinion is pretty useless information. They dont attempt to explain it, and it is sometimes used as proof for creationism- something I have an utter disdain for, arrrggghhhh
  10. Well, have a 300L tank, which has been very poorly siliconed, it dosnt leak, but it looks pretty crap. The centre brace is huge and has been stuck on with black silicone, looks shocking. I wasnt really too worried, but I'm thinking about the future, as I might be able to sell the whole thing as a complete saltwater system, possibly making a bit of money. Does anyone know anybody who could dismantle my tank and rebuild it? How much should something like this cost? I'll try to post some pics, I really want to know if I can move or fix the stupid centre brace, I want to be able to put large rocks into the tank, and also I cant put a durso standpipe in as there isnt enough clearance from the permanant glass lid. Oh, I can get a new jebao 12000lph pump for $220, ( I need a return pump) I estimate that the height required will be 2 meters, unfortunately I havent seen the falloff graph. Is this too much flow? I like a bit of overkill(when I can afford it) and I like the idea of having lots of flow. Would this be like having a tornado? Too much? I was also thinking I could just ball valve it to vary the flow rate. Would ~ $150 be enough to get a 4500lph+ pump second hand? If anyone has an old pump they would consider selling pm me or list it here.
  11. I had an idea the other day, in regards to cooling. One of the main problems with fans is that they cause evaporation, what about having an evapouration unit, ie run tank water through pipe in a seperate tap-water area with loads of fans,. All the evap wouldnt matter as it would only be tap water being lost. or how about 2 interwining tubes, with one carring tank water, and the other running in the opposite direction attatched to the mains, and on all the time. Depending on the length of the coil, the tank water would be cooled to that of the mains water, you would waste heaps of water, but thats not really a problem here, maybe rig it up to the waste going outa the DI R/O water thingy.

    vodka

Hey reef, where did you get your ethanol from? I cant even make it that cheap, I sometimes sell to my friends, midori, fancy spirit copys, tastes great. So there was no meths in it ? So it was 96% around?

    vodka

Yeah I convinced them to go with UV, altho being a student, I was more excitied about the vodka. On the vodka note I distill my own alcohol, and I will sell it to you guys cheap as, maybe for favours or just for your help. It comes off the distiller at 92%, and is just real strong vodka - tastes like fire tho I filter it through carbon, and it has no odor or flavour, just straight ethanol.

    vodka

Im helping a friends parents sort out their murky green pond, just wondering if a bottle of vodka could be a possability? the pond is 1800L wrong section I know........ just wondering what would happen. Also does this react with all the nitrate at once? Is this good for directly fixing algae problems, or just the high nitrates?
  15. Oh as a random quesiton what would happen if you put an air pump on a venturi intake? I was thinking I could put a crap airpump from an old tank on. Would this be better, worse or indifferent?
  16. Dammit I did a pretty good drawing, but it deleted all the spaces. Well, I'll see if I can find the place I read it.
  17. If you cut a right angle triangle out of the pipe, and a slit in the plug, you can turn it round to regulate air flow. Lid with slit ___________ | || | | || | top of pipe |\ | | | \ | | | \ | | | \ | | cut a v on less of an angle than this and have a slit on the plug. When you turn the plug the slit gradually has a bigger intake as it gets further along the "V" cut. I think this might be what tel is saying.
  18. I had a look at the deltec site, to see what could possibly be in the far far distant future for myself, and found they have an enormous $6619 USD skimmer with 6 eheims pumps on it, that would be very cool....., 3000 gallons is a big tank.
  19. Its the most irritional number(non recurring, to infinity decimal places), it is used in nature for leaf distribution, as the leaves will be spread in the most random fashion without overlap, it is the MOST random of random "fractions". I think its used everywhere in nature, but there is also a lot of hype about it - da vinci code talks about it I think.
  20. 200+ meters, spud guns are awsome, once fired a beer bottle 400 meters. We managed to time an apple fired straight up and worked out it must have left the barrel at 487kph. Then when we were firing it off the deck the back end blew out and smashed through a window....... I digress.......... How accurate do you guys need these things? I also thought reefers often went with lower than sea salinity. Apparently full strength is very important for an octopus, but I cant afford on of these, what about those stick on dial-ly things? How much for a run of the mill standard hydrometer?

Hahaa, never a dull moment , its always touch and go at fnzas
  22. I've decided that I want to give making my own base rock a go, mainly cost and because I want to build a nice cave for my future octopus. I've looked of reef central, and found the recipe I want to use, however all the recipies require portland white cement, I know nothing about concrete so what types are acceptable? I went to the wharehouse and saw normal cement, would this be ok? I dont really want white rocks anyway, I happy with the brown playsand coulour look (as this isnt a reef tank). Has anyone tried making these rocks before? the recipe I like the look of is, 1 cement, 4 oyster shell, 1 playsand,

    return

Hey anthony I'm looking for cheap ways to make my tank, and for me live rock is outa the question, (cost and I want a cold water tank) however you might wanna have a look at creating your own rocks. I'm seriously considering it, basicially from what I gather, it is equivilant to base rock, and will over time become covered with life, and you can make what ever shapes you want. You could buy what you can afford of live rock, and fill the gap with stuff you make yourself, the live rock will help seed the made ones. The process is as easy as making concrete, and there are lots of recipies, depending on the look you are going for. As I'm on an incredibly low budget, this is the option for me , plus I love DIY,
