  1. Well, I had the same thing happen and my fish died... I reckoned the others were beating on it, though, as I only had three at the time. I got some more and they smartened up. If it was old age wouldn't all the fish exhibit symptoms at the same time?
  2. I had this happen with a guppy from Animates; part of his tail did fall off from it, and then subsequently grew back. Good luck.
  3. And we are up to two egg sacks now; s/he has laid one in the other corner of the tank.
  4. Well, I already have more than I need in terms of snails. I initially thought that the large snail had given birth to them but I think I'm wrong given that I've got this huge eggsack now and haven't seen anything like that to produce the babies. In any case if anybody does want baby snails when they're born, just send me a PM and we can meet up.
  5. Thanks, all. I don't think I have anywhere near optimal conditions for the egg sack, but will try to keep it alive until I can buy a few things at the pet store.
  6. I'm in Thorndon and without a car. How far is that?
  7. It's Sunday.... should they be right til Monday, or shall I sprinkle them with a spoon of water or something?
  8. My black mystery snail laid an egg sack in the corner of my tank, out of the water. Does anyone know what to do with the egg sack? Does it need to be removed and submerged? Do I just leave it there? How long do you reckon before I have 100 baby snails? Wait... how many baby snails will there be? Any help would be appreciated.
  9. I saw the mystery snail eat a half-dead tetra a week after I got him. It was stil alive, but not for long. And now he's laid an egg sack....... help!!
  10. I only have black snail babies. White plant-eating apple snail hasn't managed to have any yet, though if he does, Loopy you're welcome to them next time I'm in Christchurch.
  11. I admit I love watching him. He is more fun to watch than the fry. I've made videos of him devouring plants. If he manages to have babies, you are welcome to some. But he hasn't yet, though the black one has. Anyone want the black, non-plant-eating ones?
  12. I only have guppy fry and I have yet to see him eat a living one, aside from one that was born with its intestines outside its body, and I think that it was for the best that he got that one.
  13. Yea that's exactly what I've found! I almost wish I hadn't bought the stupid white one, but I think the fry tank needs something in there.
  14. I have two snails, both "mystery snails" from Animates. The albino one I put with my fry. He looks like the one on the index of the apple snail site. He has finished off about $20 worth of plants so far. I have videos of him devouring them. However he keeps the fry tank free and eats anyone who doesn't make it... as happens with fry, sadly to say. I have given up having plants in the fry tank because he just eats them. He's never given me any trouble. I keep a black snail in my tropical tank and he's the one giving me issues. He won't touch the plants. He's stopped his escape attempts today but it's good to know that he ought to survive off of extra food and such.
  15. I have a big, black snail in my freshwater, 10 gallon aquarium. He used to be rather well behaved, but just lately he has been trying to escape. He climbs up to the top of the tank, hits th barrier, and falls back down. Does anyone know about snails? Should I be feeding him something special? Is he wanting out because he's hungry? Or is it just normal that he wants to get some air sometimes?
  16. Well, it's either hibernating or the guppies killed it and ate the body. I have not seen it since I posted this thread. I did see it wriggling in the gravel when I had just guppy fry in this particular tank, but dismissed it as a piece of poo. It was the first day that I put the large guppies into the tank that I saw its entire body and saw them attacking it. My bet is that it came out again and they finished it off.
  17. The remaining fish are now looking very distressed once again. Could I have reached the next critical point on that cycling schedule already, even though it's only been a week.
  18. Well, more than 48 hours and it hsan't come out again yet. I think they ate it.
  19. The Local Fish Shop said they were fine as a pair. I tried to make sure the little one got some food in one corner of the tank while the big one was in the other, but he only ever ate a few bites. Poor little guy.
  20. I'll list the Loch Ness Monster on Trademe and see what he gets... that is, if he ever comes out again.
  21. Poor little guy passed away. I hope he didn't starve to death.
  22. Well, I put a bit of my steak in and that didn't draw it out. It's possible that it came out at night and the larger guppies finished it off. It's been over 24 hours since I last saw it.
  23. Well, seeing that I'm curious, we are having steak tonight and I can put a piece of it in the aquarium. I do recall seeing it a few days ago but I dismissed it as my eyes starting to go. The larger guppies were nipping it like crazy but it escaped from them. That's not to say they didn't finish it off and eat it during the night while I was sleeping. What does a blood worm look like? I don't use live foods on a regular basis and never have in this new tank, but it's possible it got in with the plants and rocks I brought in.
  24. Okay, it's about 2 inches long. It doesn't really look like the leeches we used to get stuck on our legs in the river, but it is the proper colour. However the fact that I cannot find it now tells me that it very well could be a leech. I will get a picture of it if it comes back out again, but I caused enough havoc in the tank digging for it and it didn't come out. I don't know that the siphon will work as I don't know where it is. This is the baby fish tank. It has baby guppies and a few big guppies from various sourses--animates and a local breeder. I don't put any tonic in but I may have to go out tomorrow and get something. Is there a brand that's good for killing this sort of thing?
  25. Well, yesterday he looked like he was having a good deal of trouble swimming around. Today he's doing better and may even have a bit more skin back there. It's difficult to tell. I really don't like the idea of putting an animal out of its misery, but I'd be willing to do so if it was a death sentence for the little guy.
