    Worming fishies

Many fish have worms and it's part of the nature. The only fish I know of that actually gets de-wormed is discus, as their health can be drastically affected.
  2. Welcome, becks! Your years of expertise and wide range of experience will make you a very respected and valuable member of our little community Many warm welcomes and we hope you make time to visit the site often to share your pearls of wisdom.
  3. The quality is amazing. Love the detail of the odontodes on the male...

    An idea for fry

You won't have nearly the same rate of growth as if you just feed them BBS/microworms 4-5 times a day. Wild fish don't grow all that well in nature so the more stable and protected they are, the better.

    coral rock

Some jackarse around the corner is prolly using it for his garden or something....

    Sexing Cockatoos

black marks on cheeks and rounder bellies. Keep in mind tha submissive males will take on female colouration. Main characteristic of females is that they will stake out and defend a territory while males will roam.
  7. Crumple up some lettuce and put in a jar of water. Place jar of water in water heater cabinet (dark and warm) and you should have infusoria within 2 days. HTH.
  8. Did you just swap the filter in one go or did you let them both run for a few days to build up bacteria? In BB tanks the cycle might start all over with a sponge filter swap. Keep in mind that ammo-burn is pretty serious gill damage so they may still be feeling the effects from the spike yesterday that prolly killed the other ones. Work on establishing a proper cycle again?

    coral rock

I'm a bit curious what coral rock is. I'm imagining crushed coral (though I thought that made sand) and probably white? Caper - LPS is Local Pet Shop. Just a minor variation on the regular LFS acronym.

    Shrimp?

Go out when it's dark with a torch and a big fish net. Catch stuff when you see eye-glow. Some will be eels, some will be fish and some will be shrimp. You'll soon figure out what is what and where the good spots are in your area.

    Bolivian Rams

My Bolivian Rams bred in pits they made in the gravel and ignored pots and rocks. From what this website says they could do any of the above. If they've staked out a territory already it's best to wait and see as they've prolly already picked a spawning site and adding something to that corner will freak them out. Feel free to add rocks and pots to anywhere else in the tank, tho, they might move to it if they fancy it.
  12. Oh, reading the response from the present owner you do NOT want to put ANYTHING in with these guys (so kindly ignore the Borneo Tiger plug and get any tank mates outta there!)... here's a bit of info for people thinking of getting one down the line...
  13. Sounds like you have it sussed. May I recommend you use a digital thermometer with a probe to test the sand temps? I think you have one but if you need to borrow one, you know where to find us!
  14. K then, my advice would be to run over to The Switched On Gardener (in that industrial section of Upper Hutt) and take a look at the heating pads they have. Personally, I don't think sand heating is needed, but you might query the current owner about that?
  15. LOL, I think most of those fish will need their own containers?? I think he'd be fine with anything smaller than him. No one ever mentions how large the Oscars were that got munched....
  16. http://puffernet.tripod.com/miurus.html the best info I've found out there, as well as the coolest pics all in one place of the colour changes. Not much else to know aside from what they tell you there, IMO. Just don't call him "Puff Daddy" as a local puffer already has that name You can put it with some larger fish, you know... [plug]A Borneo/Siamese Tiger Fish may even make a good tank-mate!![/plug]
  17. I recommend Java Fern for that setup or go to your LFS and see which plants they have for cold water. Java Fern is tough as nails and needs to be attached to driftwood. As far as attaching things to driftwood, you can try "hooking" it onto a ragged gap (what I usually do) or you can use twist ties or fishing line. Be sure to removed anything you use after the plant has established itself. Good luck and have fun!

    Eels

:shivers: when I was in the South Pacific I was free swimming with a mask when a 5 foot green Moray came charging at me out of the reef. :bounce: :bounce: I pretty much ran across the water back to shore screaming the whole way. :bounce: :bounce: This drew a crowd and I was soon settled down and explained that his name was "Wally" and he was a tourist attraction at the local Big Tourist Resort. Later on I even fed this amazing creature but was warned over and over again to never trust him as he could take off a finger (or even a hand) without a thought. Would love to have a snowflake moray in a tank some day though!
  19. Morning Dartz, Not much to say about it aside from the fact that they can be mildly agro. Small piece of advice - try and take pics of your new fishies while still in the transport bags.. easier that way Google is your friend <--- here's a profile for the Pseudotropheus Sandraracinos (Red Top Zebra) and the pic even looks like yours aside from the red dorsal rather than the seemingly black in your photo.
  20. as already mentioned in that previous thread, people aren't going to help you if you act unfriendly. Is it really that hard to be nice to people? Put simply, not all of us are importer/exporters like you and have no idea what you're on about most of the time, so if we're a little overwhelmed by your expertise, please excuse our humble selves and refrain from lashing out with your mighty keystrokes and bashing us. kthxbye!
  21. With a tank of male-only guppies you will find that the tails will be nipped and they'll just chase each other around all day anyways. I think it's a bit mean, personally. Guppies breeding is NOTHING to be afraid of, you just save the babies if you want and when they grow up you can sell them on TradeMe or to friends, otherwise leave them as free food for the other fish in the tank
  22. He already mentioned platies 8) Umm... note to a beginner about livebearers (guppies, mollies and platies) you should keep a ratio of 2 female to 1 male as males are pretty one-track-minded and will exhaust a female by chasing her to death.
  23. 20000L is your SMALL Quarantine??? Dear gosh, I'd hate to see the rest of your tanks!
  24. Good choices! May I recommend neon tetras rather than cardinals? Cardinal tetras are about 8x more expensive and a bit harder to care for. More of a "beginner" fish, if you will The only difference between them at your level of experience is that neons only have half a blue line while cardinals have a full red and blue line.... later on you'll learn about breeding and genetics and all that jazz... Also, get one male betta for the females, no point having them feel lonely  hth!
  25. Well, came back to this thread to have a look and would like to input the following info, which anyone that visits PlanetCatfish can find pretty easily - Profile page for Panaque sp. L204 Catfish of the Month Article, December 2005 - L204 including breeding info, etc. I'm in love and would be keen to get a number of them to have a go at raising them and attempting to breed. Phil - any chance of getting a pic of them? One of yours, I mean. The pics on TradeMe are from PlanetCatfish...
