That's so cool. A friend (fishy_t) had an arrowhead and it was a really cool nubber. I miss mr. hanky, specially after seeing that vid 62 day old arrowhead fry eating -
-
Looks like mine finally got a batch out. Here's a couple pics of the youngster that bravely ventured out to give me a very special surprise The small fish in the pic is a leopard danio fry. There's heaps of them in the tank with the L226s.
-
My main advice is to feed the fry daily and do small daily water changes with water with as similar specs as the water you take out (temp and pH). They're notoriously hard to raise so GOOD LUCK and CONGRATS!!!!

Don't know about aquanuts in bio suits and clean rooms, but I for one appreciate knowing when I should head over to the ER if I get poked by one of my fish! Thanks for the post snookie, I found it very helpful and informative.

Next size up is 90cm so not really possible, good idea though!

I've tried Lighting Specialists, Lightbulb Man and a few electrical wholesalers. As these bulbs are used in many Chinese manufactured light fittings (Resun and Aqua One) I may be forced to import myself, but for obvious reasons I'd rather avoid that with fluoro bulbs :-?
-
Hi everyone, I've been looking high and low for some bulbs and can't find anything aside from what you'd see at your LFS with similar price tags. If anyone can help me source them I'd be extremely appreciative. T8 25W Fluorescent bulbs with a 6500K colour temp. The bulbs are about 75cm long cap to cap which is an unusual size so not stocked by many places so I'm happy to wait up to 8 weeks for delivery, no huge rush. Please post here or email me - [email protected] - with any help. Thanks in advance, you guys are great!

MAF did the right thing here. The fish were "accidentally imported" and should have never been let into the country. The fish were removed and euthanized by a vet, and the tanks sterilized. This is common practice with these situations and a similar action was taken when a person was interrupted "accidentally importing" plants over a year ago in Auckland. Why are you all up in arms against MAF doing their jobs? I can remember at least a dozen threads over the past year that have been removed by the people that run this site declaring something should be done about it and now there's objections when something is done? Any reasonable person could just look at the fish and the coloured offspring and know something was funky. I'm just happy that something has finally been done. Silver lining - I bet we don't see any dyed or tattooed fish for a LONG time!!!

I spoke with the distributors who sent a sales rep to my house to give it a play. When they realized it was non-repairable they sent a replacement and I shipped the old one back to them - all on their dime. I found the service to be excellent and would love to give you more info but you'll have to speak with the shop you purchased it from. Ask them to talk with the distributors about your issue and arrange for you to have it sorted. You shouldn't need to drive all the way back to Aucks for service!

LOL alan, I don't think it would be for sale! Steves, thanks! It's actually the one that I got before the three I got from you. Yours are still growing up a bit in the prop tank. Did you reproduce yours via plantlets or seeds? Now I get to wait for the flower to (hopefully) turn into a seed pod..

Thanks guys Jo0sh - yup, first time I've had one from a red lotus and it's this plants first flower. Here's pic of it presently. It's getting a bit old so a wee bit of white in the leaves and burned tips from being less than 20cm away from a 150W Metal Halide, but still purdy. Note the Green Tiger Lotus leaves just under the surface fighting for light under the larger darker red lotus leaves. And one with flash, and a coin for relative size -
-
One of the many joys of fish keeping is the ability to allow aquarium plants to flower in an open tank. I acquired a few baby red lotus plants and grew them up in a propogation tank as a nursery until they were big enough for my display tank and then moved the largest one while still potted into my 4ft x 2ft x 2ft open planted display tank. It grew HUGE under the MH lighting and nutrient and CO2 supplementation, soon covering most of the water surface with dinner plate sized leaves. About a week ago I finally noticed a flower bud heading for the surface and was rewarded with this on Friday night/Saturday morning, which was a nice touch for overnight visitors who had to put up with an air pump and bubbles all night And yes, it's still flowering. It opens at night and closes during the day, but can be seen anytime between midnight and noon. Enjoy!

I just got my Aqualog from Fuglydragon today and WOW, it's amazing! Seriously reminds me of getting my first Playboy. If you don't have one or haven't seen one, it's a full 270 page catalogue of pics pics and more pics of all the different types of plecs available. It's not a little book either, it's actually a coffee-table book that hardly fits on my shelf! Thanks fuglydragon for making my day. I believe it was his last copy, but drop him a PM to see if you can get another one if you're keen. I know he still has a first edition with additions available.

I truly doubt a city as large as Christchurch would rely on BOC for all cylinder tests. A quick look in the yellowpages brings up Canterbury Cylinder Testing, have you rung them yet? The 3.5kg cylinders are about 50cm tall incl tap. I have an all-in-one regulator/solenoid/needle valve/bubble counter and it measures in at about 55cm total, and that's mostly the bubble counter so you can get away with 52cm if you use a pill bottle style or external glass bubble counter instead.
-
With an actual regulator or do you mean a tap? I get my bottles from the local cylinder testing station. They convert 3.5kg bottles with a brand new tap and do a test, cert and fill all for $250. I think the new 5kg bottles are around the $400 mark so it's a good deal. The ex fire extinguishers can be ugly but a quick coat of silver spray paint fixes that. Don't paint it any other colour or they won't be allowed to touch it. So yeah, check your local cylinder service station. You may have more than one available and some are much more expensive than others. I once paid $200 for a 1.8kg conversion from the nearest service station as an example. I now use another - a bit farther but worth the drive.
-
Have it shipped over to you from whoever sells it closest. Any alternative would be a proper aquarium substrate and will cost 3 or 4 times more than the Daltons.

The Weipro Digital CO2/pH Controller on TradeMe will control a solenoid via a pH meter and ensure that no crash or spike will ever happen. I am one of the unlucky few that have killed an entire tank of fish with CO2. Strongly recommend this as a precaution.

Hahaha, nah seriously she went into the breeding colony. If I remember correctly you were there that day - or Mark perhaps. It was in that 4ft Bullet Nose tank and she was shifted to the AR980 with the BN colony.
-
I've seen a BN get a "taste" for discus slime and do it repeatedly until she was removed. To all you PETA people out there - I didn't kill her, she went to a breeding colony to live happily ever after and make lots and lots of discus sucking babies...
-
People already tried it out and there's a thread on here somewhere. Three people purchased it and eventually all moved on due to a large amount of CO2 lost when connecting it and trouble controlling the flow with the very simple reg on it.
-
Nope, sold about a month ago.

If you don't know what hydra are, they're a small green thing that grows on just about anything. Resembling a VERY skinny green cousin of a sea anemone they're a member of the jellyfish family. Pics can be found here on Google. Well to the point, doing some research tonight I read that these particularly pestful little blighters are readily eaten by Honey Gouramis, Colisa Chuna. I just wanted to find out if anyone here has tried this or noted it happening in their aquariums? As far as I knew there wasn't a cure for hydra, and I've only seen it once in a tank, which was quickly sterilized.

All I see is a little yellow frog with a big sign saying "Image Does Not Exist"

First of all, that check valve is going to be a problem in the long run, and a lot of your CO2 may be escaping through tiny holes it creates in standard airline instead of going to the airstone. CO2 breaks down rubber and plastic, and even the siliconized rubber tubing isn't resistant to it. That said, nice job and keep up the good work. The CO2 yeast solution works better when warm so winter temps may be problematic. A quick solution for this is to use the tanks temps to keep the solution warm by strapping the bottle to the back of the tank - just make sure it doesn't fall down. I recommend dropping the airstone as low in the tank as you can. This will give the bubbles as much time as possible to be absorbed before they get to the surface. You may also want to take steps to slow down the flow of water going through your filter, as the agitation created by the returns releases a lot of CO2 into the air. Not really an ideal place for the airstone. HFF - Mt Eden I think? - have a similar tank with CO2 and the amount of pressurized gas they have to pump into it to keep up with the filter agitation is scary. I tried counting but it was going too fast. I think it was about 10 bubbles a second. You'll never be able to produce that much CO2 with a yeast solution so getting your water as calm as possible is the next best thing. Best of luck and let us know when the CO2 starts going or the bottle bursts

Maybe I should clarify that options b and c were both in jest I meant actually physically merge with OZ....
