  1. The Pre 2008 JBL's look to be better manufactured aqua one CF's. Considering how similar they are I would not be surprised that Aquaone or more likely JBL manufacture the same filter under licence. (JBL's one are manufactured in Germany CF in China). They (2007/08) shipped with the same media ie bioballs under the first tray then foam mats for biological and mechanical filtering.
  2. You don't need to take it apart to "clean" it. Eheim's especially classics should only be cleaned when (as has happen to yours) the flow drops off. Only parts you need to open up is the impeller, washing the media can be done through backwashing as per eheim's website; http://www.eheimasiapacific.com/prod_e_ ... assic.html then run a brush through the hoses.
  3. It's a good filter and quiet, my fish are enjoying my JBL 250 now.
  4. Nope. No where on the box, manuals or the casing it self can I see a statement where it's manufactured. There are references to the Neuhofen factory site in the manual and the box. Neuhofen is where they state on their web page where they make all their fish foods. In my mind it's 50 50 with out a categorical statement if they build the filters in Neuhofen Germany or in PRC. For comparasion Eheim actully list on the box if it's "Printed" in PRC. or in much larger letters Made in Germany depending on where the unit was built.
  5. Tech data from CF1200 (from manual) Power connection: 230~240 V/50 Hz 35 W Pump output: 1100 l/h max. pump height: 2, m/WS Filter volume: 12,0 Liter Filter insets: 3 filter baskets Dimensions: 220x220x400 mm (length x width x height) (height incl. Hose connections) 2+2 Years warranty Rated for 250l JBL 500 is for 500 liters Also from manuals CF1200 flow with media and hoses: 750l/h JBL 500 flow with media and hoses: 850-900l/h
  6. The designs are pretty similar. Head unit setup slotting together of baskets how the nozzles are 360 and how the cut offs connect and operate, even have the vent at the top. They even ship with similar out of the box media, bio balls, clay rings, and then layering of various sponges. The differences are in the details, JBL production have more powerful motors that push more water with higher del head at less wattage. It seems although design wise they’re identical the components are of higher quality in the JBL’s. Like the difference between using a Toyota or a Lexus. I recently brought a JBL 250 for use in my 84 liter tank and it's much quieter than the Aqua one's i've seen running in shops. I wonder if JBL or aqua one brought the otehr guys design and then made it with better or lower quality parts to fit into their diffrent markets/price points. When I get home from work i'm going to see if JBL make their filters in PRC (manual/box check). Oh and it's a very nice filter, I've already started replacing the foam media with the various add on jbl media types like sinto and micro mec glass medias.
  7. And collagen the binding agent in warm blooded animals is also insoluble and indigestible. When fish eat insoluble vitamins and fats they can't use it. Insoluble items are stored in the liver. Since animal fats and collagens can never be digested the build up leads to death through liver failures. You can get around this by bumping the temps up to 30deg and above where animal fats then start becoming soluble. Bumping up the temps is why you get this odd dissonance where most cichlids are kept at 26 to 28degs but bred discus fed on beef heart need temps of 30deg merely to survive as they process the animal fat's they've been fed through their time as juveniles. Collagen the binding agent in cow's and humans is much more problematic as a warm blooded animal does not want the stuff that literally ties their body together melting at normal body temps. Cow's internal temps range in literature from 37 to 40 deg. So you end up with a fish that slowly appears fatter as their liver fills up with stuff it cannot excrete nor process.
  8. Would defeat the point of using ceramic's for near silent operation. much like every other filter manufacture that use ceramic's such as JBL, Hagen/fluval.
  9. Ammonia even in small amounts will burn their gills. Also you could try cutting them open and checking their livers, if they're yellow and fatty that means the saturated fats in the beefheart have caused a liver failuer.

    fluval 404

Just go for a 405. The 405 is the 404 but with a host of changes to fix problems and deficicies with the old design. Ie leaking weak plastics poor "auto-priming."
  11. Carp's have different requirements to most tropical fish. Gold fish and Koi lack a stomach, they just process using intestines. Unlike tropical fish who have evolved stomachs. Most Tropical fish species require a higher protein content and less carbohydrates. For example house cats, In Brazil and in Indonesia most cats are fed bread or rice soaked in water, carbohydrates. They;re much smaller than the house cats we have here which tend to be fed protein rich manufactured dry or wet foods. Guess which country has bigger cats and more muscular ones: NZ. Indonesian and Brazil cats are still affectionate, energetic and active, they're still much smaller on a lower quality diet. Looking at JBL flake foods, the higher quality ones increase the protine and Spurlina content with more fish fillet and algae added and less wheat and corn. Wheat and corn is added to fish food to bulk it up. It's harder to process and ends up as more feaces. Look to your own body, Eat more bread and you produce larger feaces. (less of it is processed and enters your body). Ristrict your diet for a week to Meats (fish chicken beef's) and note the difference. You'll also experience constipation. It's a bit of a balance. For fish it's the same and also goes some way to explain why Gold fish and Koi are "Poo" machines, most of the food goes right through. espically as there is no stomach to process the food. For Human's the instructional sets issued by the Australian and NZ army in text warn us that Indonesian soldier due to diet (if and when we work with them or conversely fight with them). Will be unable to match a NZ soldier in extended heavy psychical labour. I could see this even though it may be confirmation biases when Singaporean Commandos were unable to keep up with our joint NZ Singa foot patrols in the tropics. As to Vit C and the others it needs to be stablized other wise it "evaporates." In the wild not an issue as the fish are eating things that have recently been producing or are continuing to produce vit C. Other wise you get Ribina where they add Vit c (through Grapes) at the start but when you drink it it no longer contains Vit c.
  12. In english and more concise: http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/f ... tion.shtml
  13. Well it is. Look at the major brands of fish food and the "meat" ingredients they list are "cold blooded" ingredients. Fish fillets, crab, krill, shrip ect.
  14. I smoke, I'm going to smoke my entire life. It does not mean it's good for me no matter the short term pleasure it gifts me. sorry I just had to do it. And i do smoke and enjoy it considrably
  15. Intresting points is that beef heart has double the fat content of a trout fillet. That Higher tempretures are required so that discus can semi process the beef heart becasue the normal matabolism at normal water temps cannot process warm blooded meat . That fish fed on beef heart will be sick more often at temp's below 27deg also that fish intestinal systems leave most of collenegen that binds tissues in warmblooded undigested as they cannot process it.
