lifespeachy
Hi, I have have an addition to my reef aquarium that seems to be growing and also multiplying (a number have "Popped" up in new locations in the last few weeks) It looks like a large shiny black marble and is quite hard to the touch and slightly prickly. Please excuse my photo, I'm just getting to grips with the camera, this is the best of a bad bunch. Thanks in advance.

lifespeachy
OK, the reason I hadn't thought of algae is that it is hard and also big ie 1" diameter. Can you pop them?
lifespeachy
It won't suck up, it's wedged into a rock and can't be dislodged.

misnoma
Yeah, popping is bad Getting them off isn't too hard however
puttputt
That's why I said pop it while siphoning, so you suck it all up. Better that way than try to pull it off and it pops anyway.
misnoma
Good point, I stand corrected
skippy
Very interesting. Saw this one in Fiji - bout the size of a billiard ball. Wasn't game to give it a poke as I had no idea what the hell it was Is yours the same?
petplanet
and slightly prickly. and also big ie 1" diameter. From that discription it doesn't sound like bubble algae at all and the think in the photo does not look like it. Check out the images on this sight. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-02/hcj/feature/index.php It might just be some type of sponge if it is prickly. Fay
I saw some while diving in Raro too. Jetskisteve has got a few big ones doesn't seem to worry him. I pick mine off with a knife shaped for the job while they are still small.

Feelers
Skippy this... ^^^^^seems to fit the description of Ventricaria ventricosa in the link on bubble algae. You can see in your picture the reflection of the camera flash on the bubble(something I noticed before even reading the atricle) and two inches is about the size of a billiard isnt it? Pretty cool looking algae! I actually kinda like the look of red cyano also, it looks like lava. 8)
