SAFFABOY
Hi guys, I'm looking for a way to lower my ph in my discus tank. The ph coming out of my taps are 7.6 I have seen that product called ph down.It looks pretty expensive if i have to constantly buy it. What i want to know is this. What are you guys using to lower ph.Dont mention peat please.I'm over it.Looking for a chemical answer.Maybe an acid etc i can buy in bulk. Obviously this would be administered VERY carefully. Any suggestions.
Luke*
Heya, I used strong hyrdochloric acid. It's not recommended if it's gonna be swinging though. kH 6 needed to be stable, what's yours?
SAFFABOY
my kh reads 3. or 30 mg/l carbonate hardness. It's the hagen test kit.
freshwest
Saffaboy. Im not sure you should worry about lowering your pH. 7.6 is fine for growing out discus. What I found when I started playing around with my water using HCA and pH down things got complicated and unstable. Not the best for young discus. Caryl
Do not use that pH Down stuff! Try putting driftwood in the tank or fill a mesh bag with peat and drop it in the tank or pack it into the filter.
suphew
I used to collect rain water and and use this because its very soft water.

I used to collect rain water and and use this because its very soft water. really? i find it the complete opposite that's why i have peat in my rainwater drums. maybe its time to take the peat out and see what happens
Caryl
Because it only works temporarily depending on the buffers in the tank. It can result in wild pH swings too.

Caryl
Make sure it is pure peat too with no fertilisers or mould inhibitors added.
SAFFABOY
I was wanting to lower the tanks ph mainly for breeding the blue rams. The fact that there are discus in there was just another minor factor. They can live in the lower ph ranges so i knew it was mainly for blue ram egg developement. Luke*
Pure rain water has 0 dH and 0 kH. Is it running off a roof first?
