Caryl
Welcome Tracey. Do you belong to any of the Wellington fish clubs?
suemack
hi Tracey - I too have recently discovered this forum, it's really great to have people you can contact and talk to throughout the country - esp when your friends don't quite understand yr fascination with fishes

dave
Welecome Tracey , You should get in contact with the Upper Hutt or Kapi mana clubs down there they are a really good bunch of people. Details can be found in the club section of the FNZAS link on the home page . Happy fishkeeping
Caryl
Please stop telling people to read the club section until it is updated Dave. Janey said she would do it, once Cees has given her access. Corrected information for Wellington clubs... Kapi-Mana president is still Roger Smith, secretary is Dominique Hawinkels Upper Hutt president is Derek Hallett but won't be for much longer I believe. Cees is a member so may be able to advise on who to contact if required. There is the Wellington Aquarium and Watergarden Society too but they are not affiliated to the FNZAS and I do not have a contact person for them. Pegasus
Hi Tracey, Saw you hiding there for a while before you jumped in Hope all this club talk hasn't scared you, but it's sort of a ritual in the welcome pages (before you even get in the door) he he. Tons of great posts here, and lots to read, so a warm welcome to you Tracey, and we hope you enjoy your visits. What type of Cichlids do you keep, and have you spawned them yet..? Any pics of your fish at all..?
Tracey
Thanks for the welcome, guys. I hear ya, Suemack, my friends don't get the whole fish thing either. They think I'm just ever so slightly insane Its nice to hear that there are still some clubs running, my bf was a member of one years ago when he had his first tank. We have three tanks a the moment, but I'm always trying to figure out how to fit more in 210L assorted Malawis mystus catfish albino plec 570L oscar 2 g. altifrons tiretrack eel clown knife fish mystus catfish chocolate talking catfish 3 clown loaches assorted corys 5 baby red devils (looking for a new home for these if anyones interested) 3 bristlenose plecs 680L 4 turquoise severums 2 firemouths 2 convicts and their first lot of fry oscar blue acara fire eel syno catfish common plec So far, just the convicts have spawned sucessfully, but one pair of severums have laid eggs, but they vanished one night Damn catfish Will work on pics, but I'm not so great at driving the digi cam yet, need lots more practice. Sorry for the long post, I tend to ramble a bit
Chris.L
Sounds like you have a lot of fish and nice tanks  Chris-
suemack
awesome selection of tanks Tracey - and really interesting fishes to watch. What do you do with the convict babies? friend o mine up here stopped keeping them as she had dreadful problems getting rid of the babies - LFS eventually took them after much moaning - you'd probably have room for one more little tank of guppies - he he - that's how I ended up with more ! Tracey
I'm afraid to say the convicts are destined to be clown knife fish food. I'm trying to train him to eat other things, but i just don't have the heart to let him starve until he does. :-? i'm sure i can fit more tanks in somewhere...you don't really need a couch in the lounge do you? Caryl
For those who don't realise why we push the club aspect ... The NZ Fishroom belongs to the FNZAS - Federation of NZ Aquatic Societies. This is a group of affiliated fish clubs nationwide all wanting to increase interest in the hobby and make sure people set up correctly in the first place rather than do it wrong, have the fish die and decide fishkeeping is a waste if time. Anyone is welcome to join in these forums, you do not have to be a federation member, but we also try to encourage people to join local clubs if there is one in their area. If there is no local club, we offer help in setting one up!
Goldie
I must say that it was being a member of the Marlbourough Club that helped me through some of the beginner trials. The bonus' are also many, getting support, involved in tank parades, endless fishy talk & meeting like minded ppl, getting a great magazine bi monthly with all sorts of interesting articles and snippets and and and Caryl n Grant also came down when the Ashburton Fish Nuts got together and we now have a group of local people who met regularly. Pegasus
For those who don't realise why we push the club aspect ... Sorry Caryl, was just having a bit of fun  Some of the clubs and societies were here long before the net and the forums, and are still one of the best ways to 'really' get involved with the hobby, and for anyone that is in driving distance of one they would not go far wrong by joining, or like some have done if a club was unavailable have started a new one, or revived an old one. Keep up the good work Caryl, you're doing an amazing job
Caryl
Thank you pegasus, I know you were only having fun but thought I would take the opportunity to explain a bit further as a number of people come straight to the forum and do not realise there is a connection with clubs too. At least at club level you should get good information. A lot of stuff on the Net is dubious to say the least! (except forums like ours  ) This forum is particularly helpful to NZers as it directly relates to fish keeping in NZ.
Goldie
another benefit is that occassionally there are fish auctions and it is a great way to buy more fish
Chris.L
another benefit is that occassionally there are fish auctions and it is a great way to buy more fish Does anyone sell discus at those fish auctions? Do you know of any in Auckland? Chris-
Caryl
These are not regular events. Goldie is referring to a recent one held by the Hawkes Bay club which we attended. I know the Auckland clubs have auctions at their meetings but have no idea if discus are involved.
Chris.L
mm ok. Next time I go to the 'local breeder' I'll ask him if and what club he belongs too. Chris-
Caryl
PM me the name of your breeder and I will be able to tell you if he belongs to a club or not. Often breeders do not join clubs.
