chimera
how many have smoke detectors above their tanks? (or somewhere near them) i put a 3rd 400W halide on the tank and the tank temperature jumped to 28 degrees. flicked the chiller on to bring it down. wife looked at all the electrical equipment and mentioned i should have a smoke detector in the tank room (dedicated room for inwall tank as many of you know) had a cheap but spare smoke detector floating around so chucked it up. it never really occured to me that there is a potential fire hazard sitting next to my tank. peace of mind for the sake of $15 (btw, we have plenty of smoke detectors around the rest of the house, just none right above the electrical equipment that runs the tank) going to add one to the sump room too. maybe a hint to anyone who hasnt done so should consider the same? cookie extreme
tank temperature jumped to 28 degrees. flicked the chiller on hello do i read this correctly? its bloody winter and your chiller is running?? you might have a look in redoing your plumming and run it through every room in the house for heating this should also lower your heating bill. or rip a whole into the ceiling for the warm air to escape so your HRV can pump it back into the house 8) what are you going to do in the summer when it does get warm? better get a part time job to pay that power bill in feb.
chimera
its bloody winter and your chiller is running?? as i said, its the first time i've needed to turn it on in winter - and it coincides with the 3rd 400W halide going in yesterday. dont forget the room the tank is in is separate/closed off from the rest of the house. what are you going to do in the summer when it does get warm? turn the chiller on fulltime like last summer you might have a look in redoing your plumming and run it through every room in the house for heating this should also lower your heating bill. or rip a whole into the ceiling for the warm air to escape so your HRV can pump it back into the house i thought about that. the room is already wired for thermostat and fans in ceiling. thats the next job, just working out whats the most cost-effective solution. not sure venting the air directly into the ceiling with all that moisture is a good idea though? was going to direct it outside, however it seems like a waste of heat! funny, coz when we got home tonight i bailed into the fish room purely to warm up
skuzza
Your right about the fire hazard. When i got my new light i had problems with it and it burnt out one ballest. It got sent away and fixed which was good. But i noticed a week or so after i got it back they had not tied the wires back down to the holding points and one of them had lifted up and the heat from the reflective case around the MH bulb had melted through the plastic and the wire was touching. It burnt a big black ring on the reflector thats the only reason i noticed. Talk about wake up call.
Caryl
An excellent suggestion chimera. I have one in the room but not near the tank. Might consider adding an extra.
