jude
Lots of people really like them, others don't. Its just a matter of different tastes and interests. Sounds like you will be building a really nice tank - would love to see pictures when its done Cheers Jude
Ira
They're the biggest scam in the history of the aquarium hobby. There's a big factory in Singapore that's pumping out millions of identical white "African cichlids" painting them different colors and then selling them off as different species. That's why most african cichlids are the same size and shape, just different colors.
Gannet
well i like them, so can some one tell me what types they are that are from the same lakes as eletric yellows

Faran
Soz, was just having fun. http://malawicichlids.com/index.htm will tell you every fish from Malawi there is, including cichlids. The ones common here in NZ are - Kenyi, Giraffe Haps, Tangerine, Zebras, Electric Blue, Red Shoulder Haps, and many others. It's a long list and you really just need to shop around to see what's available around you. From then on it's a matter of collecting different ones. Enjoy your new tank, we're here to help! Gannet
are there any other types of fish from same lake, ie bottom feeders
Faran
Most people keep Synodontis catfish with Malawis. There are a LOT of beautiful syno catfish out there and they are well armoured and can fend for themselves in cichlid tanks.
Gannet
kool, i can get feather fins easly
ryanjury
Your tank is a little small really for too many africans according to the experts have a look around here for some idea http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/q ... e_list.php There are also pretty much pictures and profiles on most african species on there. Electric yellows are malawi's and you can get a few fish to go with them.. If you want to go african or you can stick some larger cichlids/schooling fish in with them.. atm we have: 12 electric yellows 5 red zebras (2 holding) 1 blue zebra 3 ice blue zebras (1 holding) 2 red sholdered peacocks 2 big hybrids 2 red kadango's 2 brown haps 2 OB zebras and I think thats about it they're only in a 160 litre shallow 4ft waiting for me to get the 540litre 5ft up and running... All the fish we have are pretty commonly avaliable at most LFS's.

ryanjury
If you dont really care about breeding you could do an all male tank? Is your tank a small 4ft or a large 3ft?
Gannet
its an aqua one AR-
Faran
AR850 • 155 Litres Capacity • 82x44x58cm Remember that that's only 150L after you add gravel and even less after you add rocks and decoration. Nice little tanks, let us know when/if you run into problems setting up the filter. Did you get a stand with it?

herefishiefishie
OH great, another one with african cichlids  Sensational, another person with taste. Google is a good friend in finding fish species. Lake Malawi is where electric yellows are from. One tip is to mix & match species & colourss, less agression. & as stated earlier try & go for all males.{more colour} There is a cichlid part on this forum, you could post in that section. That way you won't get uneducated replies, from the ignornant part of the fish keeping community. There's a big factory in Singapore that's pumping out millions of identical white "African cichlids" painting them different colors and then selling them off as different species. Gee I am glad most of mine came through Europe  Frenchy
ryanjury
Yeah africans are great As Frenchy has said its a good idea to go with different colours/shapes, basically just have a look around probably through this http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/a ... allery.php see what you like and probably post in cichlids with what you like and see if anyone has any or has seen any because some of them are hard to find.. When you've decided what you like and if they're avaliable then people can probably advise you how many of each to put in or if they're suitable for the size tank you have..
