Does anyone have a list of what is avalible in NZ?

I've had a looksy on the net and found a few that I would love, that look like they would be the right level of agresivness and size for my tank but don't know if I can get them here.

I'll list them and if anyone knows if they are avalible or not please let me know. Keep in mined I'm not planning to have ALL of these

Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Usisya"

Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Ruarwe"

Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Linganjala"

Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Chailosi"

Pseudotropheus sp. "Elongatus Bee"

Pseudotropheus sp. "Acei" (Ngara)

Melanochromis sp. "Brown"

Labidochromis sp. "Zebra Eastern"

Pseudotropheus sp. "Acei" (Msuli)

Metriaclima sp. "Blue Reef"

Cynotilapia sp. "Lion" (Lion's Cove)

Cynotilapia afra (Mbenji)

Cynotilapia afra (Cobue)

Also I don't want anything that will cross breed with another. I figure the "Elongatus" one's would all breed so I would only go for one of those species. Would love to know if all Pseudotropheus would interbreed or not.

I haven't seen any of them for sale in any of the shops around here, most likely if they are they're under different names.. Im sure whats isn't in the shops isn't a reflection of whats around though theres probably people with them good luck finding them! Maybe ask your LFS whats on the wholesale list?

  • 2 weeks later...

Remember the importation of ornamental fish was and still is(for a short time anyway) by "Geneus" for the most part.

Some Tilapia can survive in cold water.

So all Tilapia got band!!

plain and simple.

I knew someone more then 1/2 my life ago that had to distroy there pet tropical Tilapia when they were put on the noxious fish list.

It was a very large fish they had grown from a buba, very sad

Tilapias are a big threat to water ways here in Australia. They are on the banned list here too.

There are reports of them being caught in a catchment area in far north western Qld, farmers are complaining that the authorities ar acting to slow, well I hate to say it but to late now. Once they start catching them, I'd say that they are already established & spreading.

The sad thing is that Cynotilapia, Frontosa's & the like are completely different fish. Fronnies especially, tangys are very particular about there water conditions. {the lake itself is only 5-10degrees south of the equator} I couldn't see one handling the nice balmy snow fed rivers & lakes of the South Island for a start

Cynotilapia are just another form of mbuna. Maybe when the authorities look at introduced fish species again, someone should pass forward classifications, living conditions....with photos. Maybe someone with 1/2 an idea will see them & release they aren't a threat to NZ.

Frenchy :D
