cracker
Triple distilled vodka, (Smirnov)...1ml per 100 litres in the morning and night. Example: 1000 litres = 10ml per day. 5ml in the morning, 5 ml at night. If consistent everyday, should be gone in 3 weeks. Slow down on the food a bit too. chimera
yeah, time mainly. vodka certainly helps by speeding up the process. i added an exceptionally good article in the sticky on cyano a while ago, make sure you read all pages! by understanding how and why it occurs will help get rid of it... http://www.netpets.org/fish/reference/r ... teria.html

TM
i found ivodka did get rid of the cynao. However after i stopped it came back. its starting to go again now, haven't added anything either. Just give it some time. If you are going to use vodka i would halve the dosage mentioned before. then every day or second day increase the amount by 1ml, till you get to the full dosage. Doing it this way you limit some of the problems some people find by adding it.

chimera
vodka is a short term solution, you need to fix the cause of the cyano. as per the web site i posted above!

ghostface
its caused by excess nutrients isnt it? why not just restrict feeding and do some water changes? worked for me in my last tank if its on the rocks, then eventually the phosphates will leach out of the rocks if the level of it in the tank is lower. lduncan
i havent heard good things about red slime remover, tank wipe outs etc Probably because it kills bacteria. Something you don't really want to do. I've noticed that it often forms on piles of detritus. Get rid of the detritus -> no more cyano. Basically just keep the tank clean, alkalinity up, blow the crap out from the rocks, and make sure your skimmer's up to the job.
cracker
Cyano is also a process of cycling a semi mature tank, (Not always, but sometimes). When the tank has matured fully, cyano cannot survive if all the standard paraMETRES ARE NORMAL.

chimera
Here's a summary of what I learnt, from both reading up on cyano and from personal experience... 1. ALL TANKS have cyano, its just a matter of HOW much and what you do to keep it under control 2. HIGH DOC's attribute to large amounts of cyano 3. As has been mentioned, time will eventually cure it (almost like another form of cycling), but measures are required in the interim to remove it quickly 4. Dosing vodka will assist in reducing cyano by increasing bacterial populations 5. You MUST physically remove as much of it as possible otherwise when the cyano dies off, it will produce more nutrients which promotes further growth 6. Frequent and LARGE water changes are necessary to export DOC's 7. Good aeration and good water movement is essential to stop cyano from 'settling' in dead areas 8. Inadequate lighting can also promote cyano 9. Cyano removal additives should be used as a last resort, they typically cause more harm than good. If used, use half the recommended dosage especially if you already have fish/corals
