The general rule is you cant overfilter a tank..

Bearing in mind like joandwilly said that if your going to put something thats not a strong swimmer like a discus in there it will just end up going round in circles.. But with a external filter you can defuse the jets against something and it should be all good..

im setting up a discus tank and i do want to use it because i got given it.

but i might try completely packing it with filter media to slow down the flow rate. and maybe taking off the cap on the spray bar so theres not so much pressure.

Agreed with everyone above. You can never have too much filtration - 'specially with discus - and if they look unhappy due to the current just point the output towards the glass and it'll be just fine. I do this with a Fluval FX5 which pumps out somewhere between 2500 and 3000lph on a 460L tank and there's no problems whatsoever.

On the other hand, if you're setting up a river biotope in the future have the output nozzle in one corner spraying directly across the tank. Your fish will love it!
