FISH LUVA
My tank is 135l tank and i was wondering if a fluval 404 too big for it it is 1000l an hour. :bounce:
JoandWilly
All depends on what you are keeping in it, discus i'd say way to big, malawi's or some other types of cichlids i'd say it'd be fine. you could always restrict the flow a bit so it's not quite much flow. ryanjury
The general rule is you cant overfilter a tank.. Bearing in mind like joandwilly said that if your going to put something thats not a strong swimmer like a discus in there it will just end up going round in circles.. But with a external filter you can defuse the jets against something and it should be all good..
FISH LUVA
im setting up a discus tank and i do want to use it because i got given it. but i might try completely packing it with filter media to slow down the flow rate. and maybe taking off the cap on the spray bar so theres not so much pressure. thanks for the ideas. JoandWilly
rather than taking the cap off the spray bar, just face the spray into a corner of the tank or something like that so it has to rebound off the sides of the tank first.
Caryl
Yes, just adjust the aim of the spray bar (even towards the glass) until you have it right for discus. You can never have too much filtration.
DiverJohn
Or put a bigger pipe as the outlet or bigger holes in the spraybar. The overall volume put through isnt the problem its more the....... "squirtyness" ( :-? is that a word??? )
Faran
Agreed with everyone above. You can never have too much filtration - 'specially with discus - and if they look unhappy due to the current just point the output towards the glass and it'll be just fine. I do this with a Fluval FX5 which pumps out somewhere between 2500 and 3000lph on a 460L tank and there's no problems whatsoever. On the other hand, if you're setting up a river biotope in the future have the output nozzle in one corner spraying directly across the tank. Your fish will love it!
