Caper
Okay...Blue's tail is disappearing. This tank has already been treated with Melafix, fixed up another guppy's tail! But, has not made a difference with Blue's. The tank was treated since I moved the red eye tetras out...so I really don't know what else to do! Tested water, ammonia 0, nitrites 0, pH hah as I've said before difficult to tell but not quite 7.6. I have been doing regular water changes. He's eating, swimming...there's nothing on the tail (what is left of it) that is visible (i.e. white, blood streaks). This has been happening for quite sometime now! Please help I really don't know what else to do
JoandWilly
What other fish are in the tank, could be a bit of fin nipping going on?
Caper
Um, platies, wccm, mollies, neon tetras, 1 black neon tetra, and guppies! That is why I removed my red eye tetras. I haven't noticed any nipping, not to say that its not happening. But the other guppy's tail was fine after treating with the melafix so I don't understand why it didn't help Blue's. But then, his tail is a different shape, more long & flowing, so to speak. Just a note, except for the neons & the wccm (don't know their sex)...all the other fishies are male, ah could this have anything to do with it? JoandWilly
hmmm we have neon's and platties in with our guppies on their talls do get nipped at but the neon's tails also get nipped at, think that might be the loach's though. Tetra's are known to be fin nippers i think.
Caper
Yes, the red eye's are supposed to be that is why I got another tank to get them out of there...but neons? I'm scared I'm going to loose him, but I just don't know what else I can do
JoandWilly
never lost a fish from a nipped off tail, its not till the start attacking the body that its the problem, as long as he is eating fine he should be fine, we have the odd malawi cichlid who gets there whole tail eatn off and they are fine and it fully regrows within a couple of weeks. sharn
if you have all male guppies with it i assume theyve been biting each other? they do get pretty stroppy at each other from what ive seen? if its dissappearing and its not a fish (isolate him and see if it gets worse) you might be dealing with fin rot
antwan
the male guppies will only nip eachothers fins if there are females in with them, if there are only males they will be fine with eachother, my bet would be the neons...
Caper
I would not have guess the neons at all...they always seem to keep to themselves But then, never would have thought of the red eyes either! What is even more confusing :-? is that he's the only one, well the black guppy has a little nick in his tail but has never gotten any worse, looks the same as usual. sharn
i would get one of those breeding traps or another tank and put it in there, if the tail starts to grow back youve got some guilty fishies in your tank not wanting to own up  if it gets worse you might be looking at fin rot
Caper
I can't put him in the other 29 g tank as that's where the fin nippers are! Wouldn't putting him a breeding trap cause him too much stress? So, that leave the 10 gallon with my ottos and goldfish. Can't afford another tank at the moment! I really want to set up a small quarantine tank but just haven't been able to as yet (money reasons). Opinions please
SpidersWeb
Perhaps leave him as he is for the moment, and take another photo like your one earlier in say about a week? Then compare the tail. This will identify if its fin rot, if its healing, or if someone is biting it. Some way of seperating him from the other fish such as a breeding trap would be a good idea if he gets worse. If he's got energy, eating, and not swimming sideways - then there is no need to move him yet. I'd say he was just a slow healer. If he was being nipped often, he would learn to avoid hanging his tail in front of the culprit. I've got 10 guppies in with 12 cichlids at the moment, and they've already learned what the 'look' is from the angels! (No guppies lost, or biten and they'll go home today)
Keri Anne
I've never kept Mollies but when I first joined my local club one of the ladies was selling all of her Mollies as she believed they were attaching her guppies tails. A long flowing tail would be a good target for any fish that was going to fin-nip.
Caper
Blue died I couldn't see him so last week I was just going to do a water change with a little vacuum, but when I couldn't find him I moved things around and found his lifeless little body I have 3 mollies at the moment. I sure hope they DON'T go after my guppies
