theres probably quite a few. two that come to mind is the beginnings of fungus or aeromonas, aeromonas causes little white bump things but from what ive read it works quick and basically eats away at the fish. see this topic here- http://www.discusforums.com/forum/viewt ... 42&start=0

it has some pictures of a fish with suspected aeromonas, im not up on illnesses though sorry.

one other thing it might be is lympho? that makes little white cysts i think.

what makes you think it isnt whitespot? is it larger or something?

i had a large angel with it, i treated it with whitespot cure but it did nothing, but the fish didnt get sick or anything and it didnt spread, it just had whitespots on it.

also got a red chromide with it, chromide looks a wee bit sad tho

how long did you treat it for? i find using heat and salt works best for me, i prefer the natural method as meds stress fish. i upped the temp to 30C, and added salt at 1tbsp per 10gal/40L as i have scaleless fish, it was actually a bit under that, probably around 1tbsp per 60L. i did that for the first week, then dropped the temp to 29C the second week and back to 27C the next week, never saw it again after that :D

whitespot needs to be treated for a longish time as when the cysts fall off they break open which is when you kill it, any unhatched cysts will just re-infect the tank again. they cant live over a certain temperature too. just remember if you use salt that only replace what you take out as salt wont evaporate ie 40L replace 1tbsp of salt.

if you go with the meds i would follow directions but keep it up for at least a week and a half.

upping the temp to say 28C if the other fish can handle it would be a good idea and dosing with salt can often cure quite a few things, tonic salt is just pure salt right? doesnt have anything funky added in, i dont use it, i just use plain sea salt so thats why i ask hehe.

i have no other ideas of what it could be, aeromonas would be unlikely i think as it works quick. so it just looks like whitespot but wont go away?

i wouldnt, i think its different to normal salt, id wait for someone else to confirm whether to use it or not.

do you have any scaleless fish like khulis or bristle nose in the tank? if not you can do a 1tbsp per 20L but that can upset your plants if you have any i think. if youve got a hospital tank id do the treating in there and that way you can siphon the bottom better to pick up cysts. keep in mind it isnt as quick as meds but i think its less stressful, up the temp slowly to around 28C and you should see a improvement in a few days if it is w/s. remeber to mix the salt in a container with water before adding it to the tank, dont just dump it in, have to dissolve it first and make sure you dont re-salt if you dont take any water out :)

hope it works!!!

Fish seem to respond better to sea water than table salt (it must be the presence of the other minerals that have been removed from table salt) Table salt also has an agent added to keep the salt free running. I think your marine salt would be best. If it is aeromonas you will need to treat with an antibiotic.

Also make sure you've removed all the other meds before you start with the salt/temp treatment. And observe the fishies carefully for signs of distress, and be ready to do a partial water change to dilute the salt if necessary.

Good luck.
