Fay
Nothing I thought it would give me a reason to take some pics. But I have made a few changes so when I am in the mood will take some
chimera
i started dosing 1/2 a cap morning and night of vodka (5mls a day) in my tank. after doing so, realised perhaps its not a good idea when running with zeovit? or does it not matter? cracker
I wouldnt dose V with Z. Z has similar products. Not necessary.
chimera
thats what i figured, the zeofood is basically the same as what vodka does. so double dosing might be worse i didnt even think about that til this morning so stopped. might help getting a quick boost though
beachy
I started my first dose tonight, 1 ml for my tank(130 ltrs), how does that sound? will be interesting to see if there is an improvement.

wasp
How's it going so far Beachy?
beachy
Good thanks Wasp, this cyno thing is really disheartening, my tank just looks so dirty, even though ammo-0, nitrite-0, nitrate-10. So water is not to bad, nitrate at 10 is pretty high though. Today will be the third day at dosing, im going to do another water change, and try to suck as much of it out as i can, then i might leave my lights off, till tommorow. warick hearn
jason have you increased waterflow in the tank??? adding another powerhead/stream in the tank helps....did the job when I was dosing vodka.
beachy
I have at the moment, Aqua clear 20 power head, aqua clear 301 power head, aquamedic bio star flotor, which puts out some flow into the tank, but not a great amount. I had a sieo 820  , but wont go there on that one. How does that sound 130 ltr tank? seems to have good flow, but its not kicking up a storm. Fay
beachy after this water change I would leave it for awhile to let the vodka do its thing also you need a good skimmer I had trouble for years until I bought jetski's big skimmer Deltec 850 now probably a bit small for my tanks but doing a great job, adding the vodka helps it to collect more I have noticed. What sort of lighting have you got and how long do you run it? Sorry if I am asking questions that have been asked before I find it hard to keep up some times
beachy
Thanks Fay, the biostar seems to pull quite alot out of my tank, its a bit hard to know exactly the right adjustment though. As for lighting i have two 18 watt power compacts(red and white), im trying to get hold of the blue and white kind, but they are out of stock. I also have a aqua one al20d just normal t8, one marine blue and one marine white, which i wish i never bought, cause they are so dull. The lights are on for 10 hrs. Im so keen to get hold of a metal halide, ive been told that a single 150w would be sufficiant, but i need to save some $ first
Fay
sounds good! Keep watch out for a second hand 150 mh I got mine second hand for a good price to match my other tank and just replaced the bulb.
rossco
I hate to say this Beachy but the stages of algae you are going through are the stages of algae ya gotta go through...as much as we might try to skip or speed up a stage or two...! Now how much fun would it have been to skip all our adolescent experiences and got straight into the advanced stuff...? :-?

Perhaps the red spectrum light might be playing a part in your algae problems? I was talking to Tm about those same bulbs, and he advised me against them because of their wavelengths and associated agal problems. beachy
I hate to say this Beachy but the stages of algae you are going through are the stages of algae ya gotta go through...as much as we might try to skip or speed up a stage or two...! quote] Yea true, i'm at the 9 week mark, so the tank is still a baby. I was thinking that too, i hope i can get some blue/white ones soon, or a mh
beachy
Just a quick update, I checked water parameters today, and i cant even detect any nitrates, my cyno has stopped growing, and all the cyno that is still in the tank has turned a really light bleached red/brown. I checked for nitrites - 0 Then i checked ammonia - 0.25  I have aquarium pharmaceuticals ammonia test kit, which is starting to run out and is getting a bit old, could it be the test kit? I added two fish yesterday, 3 fish in total, could this give me a slight spike? Should i, do a water change, and stop dosing Vodka? I will go out and get an ammo test kit today, it just seems weird, the fish seem to be doing ok. Cheers
tel
you have tripled your fish load. a small increase in detectable ammonia is to be expected until the bacteria populations increase to meet supply
beachy
Sweet, i will keep my eye on it, if it rises anymore i will do a water change Thanks Tel 8)
