I can definitely recommend picking one person off the forums who lives close, and going to visit them for a chat/look at their tank. Then do this with another, and another etc

I found that it was _far_ easier to get advice and information when every conversation didn't turn into a huge discussion about stuff I didn't understand

Seeing people's tanks in the flesh gives you a great appreciation for the costs involved, and the reasons for doing things the way they have as well.

where in auck are you??

should i have my holes drilled on the back wall or at the bootom? on the back wall ican place it so even if their was a blackout it would only drain so much into the sump befor the water level drops to low? would that work?

what? other than overflow, what are you using the holes for? returning water or a closed loop? if return, drill as high as possible (or just below the water line) my preference for return is up and over the top. get a sea-swirl!!!

Up and over for return is where the smart money is.

25mm should be fine (25mm plumbing, not a 25mm hole that is).

Side or bottom? Stronger through the bottom, but on such a small tank I can't imagine it will make much difference.

but when i see peoples holes on this froum they have four of them? all on the bottom... the reason i prefer to bottom is cus is straight up and dwon no angles also it looks neater... should i get plumbing so if their is a blackout i can turn two nobs and turn the water flow of completley? also for a refegium is it better in the sump or in the tank? and should i add LR and LS to it? i nead to grow pods and meny of them!

for me the bottem is better, I hate the look of plumbing in a tank when the closed loops are in the bottem they can be hidden under rocks. Your return should be designed so a power cut doesn't cause problems you cant rely on turning off taps unless you plan to be home 24/7 and never sleep. there are a couple of people in Hamilton with tanks, hook up with one of them so they can explain how it works, easier than trying to explain by typing it out

When you say they have 4 holes drilled on the botom I think you might be talking about closed loops - not overflows to the sump.

Closed loops are for circulation - a pump sucks in at one hole and pushes it out the other, getting water down to your sump is completely different/seperate.

The simplest thing you can have is a hole in the bottom of the tank, with a pipe going up to where you want the water level to be, which sounds like what you want.

Check out this for a good description.
