Oscar Sheila
I know that keping Koi Carp is illegal in NZ, and I know why. But is there any move to change this? Like could potential owners be asked to sign a contract or something? I know that just last year Asian Arowanas were allowed into the country for the first time (if you can afford the price tag) They are such cool looking fish, especially the more exotic looking ones....like... and... and.... I'll stop now, I could go on for hours.

They're just too much of a pest and too much money has been spent trying to get rid of them. I agree, from a hobbyists point of view, it's a shame but don't expect it to change, IMHO. Andrew. peety
I had some a while ago until I moved. Since then I have met several others who have them. You can find them all over NZ thanks to some idiot who thought that native wildlife didn't matter as much as a bit of sport (fishing), he also released other species. Anyhow, if you ask around you should be able to catch some for free in most parts of north island. When they are in every creek, it seems unlikely that MAF will care too much, just don't let 'em go again once ya got em.
Oscar Sheila
Yeah, I realise that you could probably catch your own, but they wuldn't be anywhere near as specacular as the ones shown above.
peety
They're a pretty special fish, just because of their size !!! They really do look cool, even if the free ones do just tend to be orange, white, and shades of grey. You could selectively breed a few....keep the ones you like and use the others for bait (they sell them as that in the shops)... Free is free.... and I'm sure those ones you had pics of cost a small fortune overseas....
Oscar Sheila
Yeah I should think so too!
Warren
Remember however, keeping Koi in NZ is illegal. I don't know if there are any fines for keeping them but MAF will destroy any if they catch you with them. If you know of anyone speading Koi or any other noxious fish they should be reported to MAF. dennis
koi carp are a noxious species and a $5000 fine can be given to people who possess, control , rear , rase, hatch or consign koi carp
Warren
Cool. I'd hoped there was some decent penalty. $5000 seems a bit light as its not that much of a deterant. Catching Trout without a licence can have a much higher penalty than $5000 and there is no risk to the NZ ecology catching them.
