Fenriswolf
OK, at this point definitely looking at small (smooth edged) stones for my tank (which I pick up on Monday - 4 days later than I'd hoped, but YAY anyway!), which is about 180L. Now, I don't know if this calculation follows, but Alan (I think) said that... someone... (sorry! ) needed about 500Kg of stones for his 1500L tank (yeah, he decided to go with polystyrene fillers and only used about 100Kg, but that's beside the point) (this is a lot of brackets! ), so by that logic I need about 50-60Kg? Also, where on earth does one find such mystical stones for cheap? That is, small, smooth, round. I guess maybe I could raid Breaker Bay, but not sure if that'd be the right size. Thanks! One day I'll know enough to contribute myself.
Kookie
Wainui beach has a whole bunch of dark sand. It's free too lol. I know it's not quite what you were looking for though.
Fenriswolf
Ah, sorry. Um, pebbles rather than sand. Just wanted small rounded pebbles, which I figured I probably couldn't find in nature... But maybe...
Tsarmina
spend a few hours at wanui beach, you should be able to come up with the ones you want, nice colours too, reds greens, white, usually with jade and quartz in them
dee_jay_01
you can pick up small pebbles, (eg. 3mm up to 10mm, so on) from any landscape Suppliers just make sure you wash the pebbles before putting them in your tank as they normally have a lot of dirt and other anoying stuff to mess the tank up. I know over here in Brisbane we can pick up a 40kg bag of 3mm pebbles for about $20 AUD, which should be about $23 NZD. From memory, and for our 250lt tank we used about 30kgs of the 3mm. Hope this helps, as most LFS sell 3kg bags over here for about $10 AUD A bit on the pricy side...

My partner will be horrified  Sounds like fun to me :bounce: (I still can't get over how many people there are here from Wainui... ) Dee_jay_01 - good to know. Cheaper than anticipated, actually. Will go check out the free stuff first though methinks!
