evilknieval69
ok. so i have made this one topic but its two different things first question: what is a good way to get rid of nastys coming into my tanks on plants...snails and snails eggs and algae mainly....?? Second question: if i have a 100L tank sitting on the floor... how would i siphon/water change it??? is it better to have it sitting up off the floor a little bit?? thanks **EVIL** :bounce:
mustcooktea
Q2 It is easier to have the tank off the floor. However you should be able to syphon water out until the level in your bucket reaches the level of the tank water I would think. MCT
Alan
Easy. Cut a hole in the floor. Or you can be neat and drill a hole. Or you can syphon out the door or window, for that you will need a long pipe tho. Alan
sharn
lol alan, do you drill holes in your house ie lounge or bedroom for siphons  it is harder to siphon water out with a tank on the floor, takes FOREVER! not sure bout the algae and snails but quarentining them is just as easy! Alan
I do for a major leak or breakage. Check out the wardrobes, they aren't so noticeable there. Alan
sharn
imagine selling your house 'whats that hole in the wardrobe for?' 'oh, that was just incase one of my tanks burst so the water had somewhere to run to'... ahh thatd be a laugh. dont think hell decide to go that way but boy do you crack me up! Freakyfish
Hey guys Q1 rinse all your plants in freshwater out of the tap Wont guarantee everything but will help alot Q2 Get s powerhead pump and attach a hose and pump the water out thru the hose easy done Brad
Faran
Just Googled this cuz I couldn't remember the stuff that I was recommended last time... hydragea green or something. Came across a rather nifty sterilizing agent - Gold Listerine. Otherwise, bleach (non-scented) in a 1 to 10 ratio of water for 15 minutes followed by a soak in water dosed with de-chlorinators (water agers). As for tanks on the floor, my lowest rack of my breeding tank racks are on the floor and it's a bit of a nuisance. MCT was right, you'll be able to siphon until the water levels even out between the tank and the bucket. Otherwise you'll need to siphon with a hose hanging out the window going somewhere lower than the level of your floor.
suphew
You can buy small powerheads for $15-$20 just attach hoses to each side and use it to pump the water out of your tank. I have had to do this with my sump a few times which is sitting on the ground.
evilknieval69
ok. a power head with hose attached seems like a good way for the water changes but the plants... gold listerine??? what is it?? listerine as in was my mouth listerine or not lol. any more suggestions??? thanks
Faran
Yes, listerine as in the mouthwash.... The gold stuff, as in original unflavoured.

My search seems to work ok..
evilknieval69
potassium permangonate.....sounds like the best idea for me. i might ask my biology teacher at skool if i can have sum so how long do i soak it in the PP solution?? 30 mins?? also, with a powerhead pumping water out for water changes, how would i siphon off any crap from the bottom??? it is a bare bottom tank thanks **EVIL** :bounce:
sharn
chuck the in part bit on the bottom and move it around? i dunno...
suphew
Yep, that is the reason for the tube on the pump inlet, so you can move it round the tank to suck up stuff.
sharn
but what if its your regular old powerhead thats come off a filter? the inlet part is huge so youd have to mould pipe to it?
suphew
If it comes off a filter then it is a filter pump not a power head
