I have two mature looking males and 3 small females but I thinks theyre all related (got them all from the same tank) And would like to know if they will breed, and if not can I do a swap with someone local to get some that arent related. :-?

I know it sounds funny but yes brothers, sisters, cusons, aunts, grand daughters/sons can all be breed together in most fish species.

May people get put off by breeding because they think that they are unable to then breed brothers and sisters with mother or father when thats what you do if you are working on better fin type, colours, body shapes.

So yes I think you would be fine in breeding them.

If I am wrong then please someone correct me..

Cheers

I had some trouble convincing my GBAs to breed but got past it by removing the males and feeding the females up (we call this conditioning) then returning the males after a week. If they DID have a problem breeding with siblings, it's over now!

Good luck getting them to breed. Not usually a problem with BNs as long as you have some nice driftwood that they're able to make a nice cave under...

i personally try not to inbreed fish, if you can avoid it by getting others from another source your doing the hobby a favour cause inbreeding can unlock genetic deformities. the average hobbiest doesnt need to try and strengthen genes so inbreeding isnt necessary. if they breed thats ok, but its better if they breed with un-related fish (why not swap your adult males for other adult males etc?) just my two cents lol :D

oh, wow, didnt see he was in tga! i only have one female personally but i know antwan had a breeding pair he sold to evil (rogan) so maybe he still has some left over fry that have grown a bit?

i know wonderworld has male and females and they do trades, why not see if theyll swap to open up your breeding?

The best way to catch wary BNs is to set two nets at 90 degree angles to each other and 45 degree angles to the glass to form a right triangle with a gap between the nets. Then drop the bait (I use plecochips) between the nets and wait with dim lights on in the tank and complete darkness in the room. After a while the wary BNs will find their way between the nets and start munching down. You then close the gap and SLOWLY bring the nets towards the glass being careful not to create any gaps. If spooked, the BN will most likely scoot across the gravel into a net rather than out of the trap.

I do this quite often and it works a charm. Ask my BNs... they still don't know how they got caught ;)
