Fin Rot??

I think I have suspect fin rot in my new tank. I noticed yesterday that the fishes fins were clamped to a point so I put them into an isolation tank with some malachite green (what the lfs gave me for pintail in my guppy fry worked well) But this morning many of them are dead and the ones that are still alive now have a puffy white edge on their tails and fins.

For the rest of the tank I have guppies, 2 wcmm's and 1 sailfin (redspot) plec.

My main consern is the plec. Would treating the tank with salt and malafix harm it at all or would I be safe? The rest of the fish in the tank seem fine but I want to be sure incase there is still traces of it in the water.

Cheers

Hi PJ,

Really sorry to hear bout the lose of your Fishies.:cry:

I would maybe, do a water change before you add anymore meds to the tank, Plecs are pretty hardy, so I think it would be fine to go ahead and add some Salt and Melafix to the tank.

Maybe wait and see what other advice posters give you, before you go ahead and treat.

Good Luck, hope you Fishies get better soon. :bounce: :bounce:

plecos need a half dose with most things, especially salt. if youve already given a full dose do a water change to get all the meds down. im not sure if melafix can be given at a full dose to plecos though. id imagine itd be easier to isolate the other fish if the pleco is fine to reduce on meds and stress to the pleco (can be stressful for fish to be treated with meds)

Yeah I know but I noticed today that the pleco has a red edge to one of its side fins :(

So I have only put a half dose of melafix in (80ltr tank so 1 5ml dose per 40ltrs)

I am to repeat this for 3 days so I shall see how it goes. So far no other fish are showing signs of fin rot. I have removed all thoes that were and culled them.

Horrible :(
