reef
not many butterflys are reef safe, even copperband can be a pain. these are the one that are likly to be ok, burgess butterfly declivis tinkers copperband zoster longnose butterfly. careful as there are two types that look the same. the butterflys that come from deep water seem to be reef friendly. but the down side is that they are expensive. i think that is it, might be a few more but from experiance the rest will eat corals. SteveA
Are the emperor angels reef safe? and what size tank would you need to have one. Do they eat shrimp. My guess is Angel means maybe and possible yes to my questions but I'm not sure. I am aware of Emperor Angels being successfully kept in a reef tank and even spawning in one. Some of the literature I have read lately suggests that, contrary to common belief, may of the larger angels may actually be better reef inhabitants that a lot of the dwarf angels. This may not be so if you like sponges tho, but the Regal Angel I keep in my reef tank totally ignores sponges. He will eventually take out any zoanthids and stuff like anthelia though. Drifty
my emperior loved anything soft(mushrooms, leathers etc), I had no stony corals at the time so am not sure if they will nip those. As a juvinile he wasnt a problem but when he matured he was a complete pain

Steve I’ve found the same to be true. Previously I’ve had a Flame Angel, Coral Beauty and White Tale Pygmy. All of them nipped corals (SPS and LPS). I didn't have that much coral at the time and they were quite devastating. I was especially bummed about the Flame Angel since that was one of the first fish to attract me to the hobby. I now have a 4†Majestic and 3†Blue Face who are both model citizens (so far!! ). Steve
SteveA
One thing I have considered, an may well do, is put my currently spare 250W MH lights above the 600 and try out various corals in with my 'fish only' fish. At the moment I have some mushrooms in there and the Emperor has ignored them. It will be interesting to experiment as it grows older. Iw will also eventuallty get a clown trigger and some butterflies so working out who is doing what may prove a bit of a challenge. wasp
Actually if someone does want a FO type fish, I have a very healthy Niger Trigger, 3-4 inches long, free to a good home if you give me a frag. Actually he is reef safe, it's more small fish that he may take a swipe at. Fine with most fish though, PM me.
