quack
hey, one of my convicts has got this "thing" growing(i think) at the start of the fin on his side? It looks like a absess or something, its kind of a browny colour and its been there for a while now with no problems but now hes starting to sit on the floor of the tank trying to rest his fin(i think) inbetween casing other fish around (protecting his new born). could someone please give me some advise on what to do or treat him with. thanks! Caryl
The only thing I can find to match says "black or brown nodules appear on or between the fin rays and at their bases". If the fish isn't wild caught (and I assume, being a convict, it isn't) then it goes on to say "this might involve small lesions. Wait for further developments". If the lesion can be ruptured and it then discharges pus it could be a bacterial infection. Isolate the fish (if you lose the fry they will soon produce more) and treat with a bacterial medication. quack
ok so do i have to pop it or peirce it with a needle or something then treat him with medicine or can i just treat him. im not worried about the babys they have new ones every few weeks its a pain in the butt! hes getting worse every day and is almost always sitting on the ground:(
Caryl
Being squeamish, I would just treat him without attempting to burst anything
Faran
Wear some disposable gloves then remove him from the tank and hold him in a towel soaked with water from the aquarium. Use a sterilized needle to gently open the abcess and examine to see what type of fluid (if any) excises. If it then discharges pus it could be a bacterial infection. Isolate the fish (if you lose the fry they will soon produce more) and treat with a bacterial medication. Remember; your primary purpose here is to explore, not do surgery. Don't go digging around while you're in there!

herefishiefishie
Don't go digging around while you're in there! Hmm, some exploratory surgey, I'll just go grab my kit...I come with me own nurse(g/f) too. It is hard to say, could be bacterial & the infection has set in and could be now effecting the swim bladder. Judging by the him sitting on the floor. or verse vica Did the wound made a crackling sound when pricked or stoked/touched. then it is a swim bladder disease. Make sure tank is aerated sufficiently. Treat with Quinine Sulfate. my main concern here is when you opened the sore & nothing came out. was the sore red edged? Could be open tb. Seriously I'd take him out, treat him with good anti-biotics. but then again to treat him, way up costs to love of the fish... quack
it just looks like a light brownly lump at the start of the fin by the body. there was nuting that came out or there was no noise at all. he is in his own container(2l) floating in the tank at the momnent with a air stone, some salt and i just put some tonic in there. i was planning on taking him out and replacing him with another female, as when they have babys(which is all the time) they are really aggresive to the rest of the fish even my large jack dempsy is scared of them but i was goin to give him to my mate so i wana try fix him

Try reading through the diseases on this page: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/i ... seases.htm maybe you find something that sounds like what your fish has... quack
ok i treated the convict with 'tonic' and tonic salt for a week with no improvment. then we put him in his own 40l tank and gave him a rest for a few days. then we started treatment with melafix and have been using this for the last 4 days at the recommended dose (also tonic salt). the lump has changed to a whitey colour and there is also a few more that have come up on the end of his body by the tail, but apart from that i thought that the other one was looking a bit better(hardly though) . we have just had him out of the tank and pierced them with a needle again, and there was blood coming out of all of them with a slight yellow colour but the last time we done this there was nothing. we also put a drop of melafix on them while he was out. if anyone has got any more ideas on helping him then PLEASE let me know. sharn
look into lympho, i think it was modern angels fish that has this and was wondering what it was, have a search around. if it is its very contagous and you need to isolate him or kill him, they can get bacterial infections in the wounds so have something on hand for that
