Im getting a new 6 foot tank built and stand built for a malawi setup that will be converted over to a reef tank when im rich lol.

First up, what size holes do i get drilled in the tank and where?

What size plumbing is the best to use?

is a tank just under 3 foot big enough to be the sump?

Where can i get a metal stand built?

Any help would be much appreciated.

1) size of the holes depend on the size of the plumbing i.e. 25mm plumbing = 30mm hole. You need to decide where you want to put them, commonly you would have one in a back corner for your over flow (unless you want to put the over flow in the middle and/or want to have two over flow holes as a backup. Other holes would be for closed loops, only you can decide if/where you want these. I have put all of mine in the bottom of the tank so I can hide them under rock work, when finished I wont be able to see any plumbing in the tank.

2) I used 32mm pressure plumbing, this was proberly over kill but I wanted to make sure I never ended up with plumbing to small (its easy to reduce a fitting to fit a smaller pump, but impossible to make your plumbing bigger). I used 40mm for my over flow but I have huge return pump. I did look at 25mm plumbing which is the next size down but it just looked too small.

3) The size of the sump depends on how much water you are planning to put through it and how much equipment you have. Tanks are cheap (compared to the price of setting up a marine tank) so if you happy that a 3 foot will hold the flow/equipment then go for it, but make sure you have the room to put in a bigger sump later. FYI my tank is just a little smaller than yours (about 100mm or so) and I have a 4 foot sump, it is too small because I don't have room you get rid of the micro bubbles from the return, but my return is pumping 6000-7000lph so....

4) Any engineering firm can make you a stand

find out what type of pump you are going to use to see what size plumbing you need, then you need to get some fittings to go through the glass that will fit your plumbing this is then telling you what size to drill your holes.

3ft x ? x ? sump will depend on how it is set up

there are some very good sites around about sumps

draw your stand the way you want it, with all the sizes on it and take it to a engineering shop and have it made.you may have to shop around to find the right price

on the L angel that you use around the base of your tank make sure that it is high enough to cover your baseboard, poly, tankbase

good luck
