Mark
I have had my marine tank set up for about two months now. I have decided to replace the glass lids to reduce the amount of evaporation. Is this a wise move or not. Who has lids on there tanks and who does not and why not. The temperature has not changed much but the evaporation rate has near stopped. Mark
cracker
There is nothing wrong with having the lids on as long as your prepared to clean the glass all the time to remove the salt creep off the lids. Otherwise it will reduce the amount of light penetrating into the tank. Plus it can make it awkward to get in and move things around. Keep a close eye on the temperature. What type of lights do you have?
HelifaxNZ
My lid is split into 2 so half of the lid is on, the other half is raised on one side so my fan can blow cool air in to circulate and reduce the heat. I have recently added fly screen to the open lid to stop any fish jumping out.
chimera
lids off for me, as cracker says ya dont want to reduce light intensity (depending on what you're keeping of course) I have recently added fly screen to the open lid to stop any fish jumping outgood idea. rip little blennie
ghostface
some fly screen would be good, as long as it doesent block much light. i run lids on at the mo, as i [still] dont have rodi filter, so cant keep up with evaporation
lduncan
Having the lids off the tank can help cool the water up to a degree or two with the help of a fan. I don't bother with lids, too messy, another thing to clean, and i'd need a chiller if I had them on. The tank would over heat. Tanksman
Lids are off on my tanks - except when new livestock goes in that may be inclined to jump - It saves me breaking the lid and getting  that I rush into things
Ira
I generally put lids on my tank over winter. The extra cooling isn't needed then and it cuts down evaporation heaps so I don't get condensation on literally everything in the house. Mark
Thanks for the info guys. I have two 250 halides and have just added some soft corals. Main reason for putting the lids on to reduce evaporation as i will be away for 5 weeks at a time so will intrust the tank upkeep to my teenage son. I will see how things go if i need to i can always install a auto top up. cheers
