Billaney
Hi I'm a little worried about my 200L community tank, Its a well established tank that has had no problems , its a little over stocked but nothing major and well filtered with a Eheim external filter, i also run a air wall which aerates the tank as well as looks nice. Yesterday i did a big change around in the tank, adding a peice of wood and 1 extra stone, nothing major but did do a 45% water change at the same time a little excesive i know but there you go. Last night they were all fine and up till late this afternoon all was fine , i've just noticed at about 9pm a lot of the fish are at the surface and some breathing heavy, I've tested the water and its almost perfect , to withing a wisker . Apart from the water change i can't think whats happened , I've increased the air flow via the pump. Any ideas guys ? Should i be this worried ? , its just out of the normal behaviour
Snowman
Hows your temperature been, i've noticed a few days where the temp has got up to 28 so i've had to crank up the air pump and move my internal filter up higher for more surface disruption as the GBA have been surfacing for air. They seem ok at the higher temp with the extra air and water movement so hoping thats all thats wrong with yours. You could always turn or move your spray bar up for more surface movement. Temp is just under 28 but thats close to normal for that tank in the past week or two its raised to 29 during the day without this happening. I've increased the surface movement and keeping a close eye on them.
jude
Is it possible that moving things around released something sour - I seem to remember Alan saying that syphoning too deeply can bring anaerobic bacteria to the surface. Or would that show up with the water tests? Cheers Jude
LYNDYLOO
Is it possible there is something leaching out of the piece of wood you have put into the tank?, just a thought. Do hope you find out what the problem is. Good Luck Lynda

Warren
By moving stuff you could have released a whole pile of organic matter. The filter would have broken this down quite quickly. This can sometimes lead to an oxygen shortage if the bacteria in the filter use it all up. Does your Eheim use Effisubstrate in it. If so this is a very effective media that can house huge bacterial colonies...

Sounds like i did your what you all say , i realised some bacteria when i moved stuff out. We live and learn , and at least no fish paid the price
Billaney
Damn! I lost one of my large orange rainbows out this tank tonight , still testing good so it must be some toxin thats been released by the change around , i've just done another 30% water change and will asses them tomorrow ...damn i hate losing fish like that
jude
Sorry to hear that Paul. Water changes sound like the right way to go and I guess if the toxins were in the tank they would have sneakily built up and done some damage anyway. Billaney
This is crazy a 2nd large rainbow just died that was ok 15 mintues ago !! I have no idea whats happening !
Billaney
Ok with two great fish dead and no idea why I've pulled about 7 large fish i would hate to lose out and put them elsewhere, but what do i do now ? in the last two days the tanks had a 40% & 30% water change and there still dropping, the wood and 1 rock i added have been taken out. The water has been tested for PH, Ammonia , Nitrate & Nitrite and all are good, the filter is working fine. Its the larger rainbows that have died so far, even tho the tank contains fish like neons, swordtails, millies and glass cats and even bristlenose and 3 hoplo's they all seem fine so far. Any help would be great, do i have to strip the whole tank ( 215L ) and start again from cratch ? would this fix the problem as i don't know what the problem is ? LYNDYLOO
Hi Paul, Really sorry to hear about the death of your Rainbows, really sad, would putting in another Power Filter help to get rid of whatever is in this tank, I don't know, just a thought, otherwise it may be a matter of stripping the Tank and starting all over again, or maybe taking out your really important fishies, as you have already done, untill the tank settles back down again. Really hope you find out what the problem is.I know how frustrating it is when you have fishies die and you just cant work out why. jude
Thats a good thought LindyLoo - perhaps an internal filter with some charcoal in it to absorb whatever it its. Cheers Jude
Billaney
This seem stable again today , no more losses today Death toll so far 2 x Orange rainbows 1 x female orange thick lipped G ( my breeding female ) 1 x Swordtail male 1 x bristlenose. Lets hope thats where it end !
