SHARK
Good morning to everyone. I have a load of Goldfish Fry & some of them seem to have a white slime or fungus growing on there body & fins. I am treating with Melafix. Any other ideas on what to do, plus what is this disease. Cheers the SHARK.
Caryl
Overproduction of slime is a defence mechanism, probably caused by poor water quality. Fungus is usually an infection. How many fry, what size and what are they in? What sort of water maintenance are you doing? Melafix won't help if you don't fix the cause - most likely the water quality. SHARK
Thank you for that. There about 50 fry in each bath tub, about 250liters each. The fish are Tancho Comets & Calico Fans all about 25 to 50mm long. The water is greeny in colour, but not pea soup. I have a small powerhead in each tub for water movement, plus both tubs are airated. They are about 3 to 4 months old. I have breed Goldfish before & never had this problem. Was wondering weather it had anything to do with the warm temps. Will do a bottom clean & water change, then monitor the sitch. Would it still be wise to use the Melafix. Caryl
You mention aeration but no filtration. Goldfish are very messy. The green won't bother them, in fact they like it. Cleaning the muck out of the bottom and doing a partial water change might help. Do you have any test kits to check ammonia levels? Warm temps will certainly lower the oxygen content but this on its own would not give them the description you describe, they would be gasping at the surface. Not sure whether you should keep using the Melafix as I do not use medications if I can help it so do not have experience with them.
SHARK
Hello again. Have done a bottom clean, lots of shit & waste in the water, plus gave it a good clean out. Have both tubs going through a filter now plus have added some Pond-Zyme Plus pond cleaner, i use this in my big ponds to clear up unwanted waste, very good stuff. I will keep an eye on things over the next week, see what happens. I will continue to use the Malefix, cant see it doing any harm. If you have any more thoughts on this please advise. Thanks again for your help. Cheers the SHARK
Caryl
Can only suggest you keep up the cleaning and water changes and the problem should resolve itself as the water quality improves. Good luck
