Hi,Im a teenager new to the whole tropical fish thing and only been at it for a few months with my 40*25*25cm tank containing 3 zebra danios,3 black neons,3 neon tetras,2 swift rasboras,2 orange neons and a plecostomus.Well my dilema is that next month im getting a 100L tank and well am going to need some more fish and plants for it.I have no idea how many fish to buy but would like a few types of tetras like the serpae, lemon and Glow lights but have no idea how many to get as i dont want to over crowd my new tank and i only want about 6-8 real plants but dont know which would be best.I also have no idea what i need to have or do for the overall care of my fish.i feed them twice daily with colour enhancing flakes and those pellet things for my plecostomus and treat my fish to a tablet of frozen bloodworms 0nce or twice a fortnight.i have no idea if i should ph test my tank or what i am totally clueless.can anyone help me with what i have to do or get?

regards a very clueless, casey. :(

Okay well first of all welcome to the teenage keepers club :D

100l you'll find is a nice step up from the small tank you have now. Live plants are always awsome to have, suggested easy to keep plants would be, Java Fern/moss, Ambulia, Cabomba, Indian Fern and Water Sprite.

What Wattage heater do you have in your little tank? i would suggest a minimum 100watt heater for your new tank. Also filtration, you'll want a powerhead filter of some kind with an LPH of 300-500, Suggestion a Shark400 or Shark600, there great filters.

As for stocking, at the end of the day its up to you, best to keep a beginners tanks slightly less stocked. Bascially in your tank i would suggest 20inches of fish, so figure out the fish sizes, and work from there on how many fish you can keep in your tank.

Sounds like your doing everything right as far as feeding the Fish themselves go. If you do not already know you should be doing a water change or gravel clean at a minimum once every 2 weeks until the tank is properly stabilised, then it can go longer without to much maintenance. Remember not to over feed.

A lot of Pet Stores will test your tank water for you for a small fee if you take a flask or container of some kind into them. Otherwise, although it is not really necessary, (personally having gone without test kits for years) you could go and buy the 2 most important test kits, being Ammonia and PH.

hi welcome another teenage fish keeper here

do you no what kind of pleco you have? as it will most proply grow out of the new tank

as for test kits personally i never bother with them ive done one test and never even new if it was good or bad so didnt try again

for fish a few ease to keep tropical fish would be livebearers eg. guppies, platys and sword tails. gourmis are another nice addtion to the bigginers tank and also a bigger school of tetras like somebody already said but as shae said at the end of the day its up to you on what you like and what you think looks good

oh and where abouts in nz are you

cheers :)

thanks for getting back so quick zoezealand and livebearer_breeder.your info was greatly appreciated.well i have a fluval tronic 150W heater and an under gravel filter plus air pump thingy.I clean the tank every saturday and use my internal filter for 30 minutes after each clean to clear the water as only 30 minutes because its a wee bit too strong for this little tank but ideal for my new one.i did originally have 6neon tetras but 5 died due to the fact that i hadnt cleaned the whole tank in a few months and well suddenly overnight the tank was filthy oh and one of my black neons puffed right up and died so yeah i felt really bad about that.i was not aware that you had to do the whole tank once a month i thought you just had to do quaterly or thirdly changes once a week so i bought 2 more to keep it company but they seem to be happier in higher numbers well so i know now.the internal filter is an elite stingray 5, 2.9W and yeah is a little to powerful for my little tank so i rarely use it but it should be good for my new tank aye?.

oh and can you guys clarify for me a few things?

*you clean the whole fish tank once a month-true/false

*you have to leave your light for the tank on all night-true/false cos well i turn my lamp i use for it off when i go to bed and am not sure if thats a good thing or not.

*you have to change your carbon cartridge in your air filter thing every 1 or 2 months?

yeah im just clueless but hopefully you guys can help :D

At the moment, I wouldn’t worry to much about Fertiliser and Co2, the amount of plant is up to you, ive listed some simple plants to keep a grow, some plant when they get big enough can be trimmed and propagated. How much light will your tank get? The amount of light depends on how long the plant survives or how long it takes to grow. Also a finer sort of gravel is best for plant growth.

1. false, clean it fortnightly if possible, not completly though, just filter media and gravel bed.

2. keep doing that, give your fish the same bedtime as you

3. Change it every month or so is smart

Personally I find Wet pets far better in all categories, when I’m up there at any rate.

In regards to Angels, I have a vendetta against them, so whenever anyone asks me "should I get angels?" the answer from me is always "NO WAY" I think there horrible fish. So in my opinion don’t get angels :D
