MRSkz
I've had my male in my 15lt tank with my females for a week of unsuccessfull breeding so I decided to return them to the 2 footer to recoperate. needing the 15lt for something else I also placed my male into the little isolation cup that hangs on the side (holds about 1 and 1/2 lts). I also, recently, went out and bought myself 2, 1/2 male guppies. now never having a problem before with tail munching from bettas I decided there was enough cover for the females and let the male out (not liking to keep him n the cup for very long). I left him out overnight and awoke to fined my 1/2 black male with the bigger tail chewd almost in half (quite literaly no tail at all). I was very suprized he was still alive even happy looking. My other male has also had his tail shreded but he still HAS a tail. I have put the 2 males n the cup, added malefix, salt and a sprinkling of Ganoderma plus alot of hope. I have only thought about it since this has happend but I have never had any black taild guppies in with my bettas, they had died before I got my 1st betta. I was wondering if other people have had problems with bettas attacking just the 1/2 blacks or if they have munched orange, yellows and other colors aswell. Funnily enough the male betta was fine with the 1/2 blacks while the tank lights were on.
Faran
Heya Tams, Yes, bettas are well known for shredding the tails of male guppies. They see it as competition or whatever... they think it's another male and go agro. Now, did you buy 2x 1/2 males or 2&1/2 males? I'm guessing they're half blacks, aye? Best of luck healing them and getting them in with the gyrls! blue
PENEJANE
they are two half black males. I had the same thing with my Male Betta. I also had a bright orange male and a half black male with a big red tail. These two males were never touched. The only one that was attacked were my solid half black males. Why would it only be the black males with black tails? Why not the other colours as well. I have seen tammys setup and her male betta has no interest in the male guppies that she had in there before but her two new half blacks are a different story. Bluetom
My siameese fighter took to all my guppies. I think it has to do with the way the move in the water and any shine from them????
MRSkz
I was just baffeld as I said I've not had a problem with other colors in with the bettas. since this morning my more seriouse munched male died. as I said before though I was supprized to fined him alive in the first place. will look at replacing him, if able, tomorow. MRSkz
I don't know about betta's having probs with other fish but what I would suggest is have a breeding trap avalible, don't leave the betta to roam free at night, and observe, observe, observe. if you have even the slightest inclination that your betta is harasing other fish take it back. Of cource it would do to fined out if that is an option before purchasing. hope that helps a little anyways,
casey05
thanks, that does help but um whats a breeding trap?
Caryl
Breeding traps are small plastic or mesh containers designed to float in the main tank. They are used to house single fish to keep them away from others, or to keep a livebearer in while she drops her fry. The fry are supposed to fall through a small gap in the bottom into a chamber below and safe out of the way from being eaten by mum or other fish in the tank. casey05
oh,right so i should get one of those for my male betta if i get one and put him in during the night or all the time?
casey05
do you guys find guppies to get along with tetras and danios and rasboras okay?
Caryl
Yes but some tetras, danios and rasboras won't necessarily get along with the guppies. They like to nibble on the guppy tails. Shouldn't be a major problem though.
casey05
Thanks Caryl. My new tanks bigger so would you expect less interaction between different species?Im getting bigger numbers of the current so im hoping there will be a more harmonious environment
Caryl
In my experience, the shoaling fish have pretty much left other species alone when they have been in good sized groups (over 6) then they spend all their time keeping each other in line and don't disturb the other fish. livebearer_breeder
oh,right so i should get one of those for my male betta if i get one and put him in during the night or all the time? Casey, I disagree with MRSKz totally. Bettas are infact hassled more by other, even smaller fish, than vice versa. I’ve found every single betta I have kept to be well natured, adds beautiful colour to a tank and will feed from your hand, I find them very friendly, not shy, absolutely wonderful fish. They are not nocturnal; therefore putting them at night in a betta floating house is pointless. Shae
MRSkz
Actualy I have found that danios were bullies in my tank. they would run my guppies, bettas and any thing else ragged. in the end I took them n 2 the LFS (as they had been given to me by a friend switching to cold water tank) and got something else. I've never been able to keep neons alive and that's the only kind of tetra that's ever seen the inside of my tank.
shiuh
um.....danios is actually not a tetra species im afraid to say.
mickey-tropical-fish-mad
guppies and bettas are NOT compatable. Two male bettas will fight to the death and beacause male guppies are simular with the same sort of tails etc they are not ment to be kept together this is a shame however as they asre both exquizite fish! They are Compatible. Especially if the all the fish are brought up together. Casey- Raboras can be nasty work on big beautiful tails, infact they cut down alot of fish you could own, in my opinion not worth having rasboras. casey05
well i have two of them and well one of my danios not long after i got it i think had its tail munched off cos it looks like a pirahnas had the tail in its mouth and has chewed it off to the skin.Quite sad really but all the others are fine.Do you think i should just leave it at two swift rasboras and not get any more.Hopefully since theres larger numbers of the others that the two rasboras will leave them alone :-? The rasboras though dont seem to hastle any fish well not that i have seen.perhaps those two munched on its tail during the night or something?i dont know The danio still swims okay tho. livebearer_breeder
Better to get a larger school of them as they are less inclined to upset other fish. Shae
