Fay
I collect my water from Sunset beach which has black sand (iron) I wander if that had something to do with the leathers, star polps, organ pipe, xenia kicking the bucket. When I up graded I had to do almost 100% water change. HERE IS A GOOD PLACE TO TALK ABOUT IRON

Alan
Aren't those sands in the islands just scrunched up lava. Idon't think that they have the iron content that the West coast beaches in NZ have. Just my understanding, I've been wrong before and I dare say I'll be wrong again. lduncan
Hawaiian basalt is around 10% iron. The black sands around NZ are around 60% iron.

wasp
After all the technical mumbo jumbo that's been posted over the last few days on the iron subject, and still left nobody any the wiser, I'm thinking it's maybe better to just focus on the simple things that will make for a healthy, attractive tank. I don't see a correlation between those who want to turn their hobby into an exercise in rocket science, ( well some of them anyway ), and the health of their tank. Me, I'm out of the iron debate, it's given me a sore head, that's about it. Maybe when I'm feeling better, and my long time protagonist has something to say that's worth hearing. Rocketman
I'm from the same area ( Pukekohe ) . I get all my water from my mates place at Puni ( bore water straight from the 3rd substrate level 80 ft down ) his place is about 100 metres away from the Waikato river . CanadaReef
I use Piha water, and no problems, but I do let it sit for 30 + days in the dark.
neopole
sunset beach has a lot of fresh water in it, and also contaminates from the river. i remember draging home 100lt of water once that i got straight from the surf beach, when i got it home, i did a "taste test"....mmmmmmm fresh water! so depending on the tide, the salt content and fresh water contamination content will vary widely. after that episode, i only got my water from clarks beach. but the sealife around the rocks at the port is amazing! mmmmmmm might have to start up my tank again!
