Anthony
so one of these is a bad idea? http://www.myfishtank.com/zooms/filter_bio_02.jpg http://www.myfishtank.com/zooms/filter_bio_01.jpg
chimera
save up for a decent protein skimmer instead, will be alot more beneficial to your tanks overall filtration requirements

Anthony
or do u have like a list that has what requires what lighting?? cheers
chimera
dont even bother with sps for now, just stick to some nice softies and a couple of fish. dont bother with heavy lighting like halides either - maybe look at T5's or even some cheap fluoro's instead. keep it simple to start, when you are comfortable with the tank and have learnt from it, then move on from there. keep an eye out on trademe for deals, dont buy new unless you have too. post questions here on pricing and others will let you know if its a deal or a rip off again no offence but a part time supermarket job just wont cover a full reef tank so stick with the basics first, learn from them and save yourself some cash. alternately, save up heaps, buy some foreign exchange or shares and make your money that way who knows you might just be the richest 14 year old in nzl
Anthony
cheers i wouldnt no what MH to buy there all so expensive so should i just go with flouros and how many and will i need lights on my sump?
chimera
maybe a couple of twin 40W fluoro's? im not the best person to ask on lighting, there are others on here who know alot more on the subject. dont worry about lighting for sump. first biggest purchase should be a skimmer (maybe a weipro from deepblue aquarium for around $140 could be a good buy to start off with?) aye carumba, its late. im hitting the sack, gotta get up in 6 hours...! Anthony
i was thinking about one of those needle wheel skimmers from deep blue for $
chimera
even better idea - man they must be paying you too much at the supermarket
suphew
For your lights I would reccomend getting 2-4 T5 if you dont want to go straight to MH, that way if you decide you need to upgrade to MH the T5's are still useful for running blue tubes. Also don't discount MH lights, its possible to get setup for about $100 + blub for 400w (aka pies setup), also I use secondhand 250w MH, I got them from work (they were upgrading the office), but I have seen them at second hand dealers a few times. Pies
Yah stick with Fluros for now, new T5 or old T8s. Buy new bulbs. this is the thing with the hobby i've seen a few people fail with. The money that is. For example 2 T5s and 2 MHs on a tank. Your looking a bulb replacement costs of over $350.00 a year, EVERY year, FOREVER. On top of everything else thats happening, you are going to HAVE to spend at least that much every year on bulbs alone... Keep it simple, see how you go. Keep ya eye on the 2nd hand bits and pieces and grab it when a good deal comes up (Sea Swirls turn up 2nd hand from time 2 time, as do pumps, skimmers and just about anything else). Go big as poss on the tank too, and the sump. Size counts Can't afford it? Sell ALL your freshwater stuff, chances are you will NEVER want anything to do with it again after the marines Pie
Anthony
thanks pies so how much is it gna cost you every year for bulbs? yeah the size cheers for that im pritty sure im going to go with 4ftx2ftx1.5ft and just a tiny bit smaller for sump so it looks nice in a cabinet yeah thats probly going to happen ive already got rid of 3 of my freshwater tanks and ive only got 3 small ones and a big one set up might look at selling the big one
Pies
Good man, get rid of those freshwater tanks and welcome to the dark side. Bulb replacement for me? Hrmmm $125ea x5 every 9 months + say $40ea x4 for T5 bules every 9 months. You can work it out, just don't tell me. 4 foot is good. Still if you have a larger freshwater, use it, use the 4 footer for the sump. W00t your there. Remember you can have a large tank and stock it like a small tank. Anthony
how would that work? having large tank and stocking it small?
Pies
Put less it in. Its all about bio-loads. Keep the load as low as possible for better results. Pie
Anthony
well i wont be able to afford like 20kg of rock at once so ill have to do it slowly how much rock to you think ill need?
Pies
20 KG of rock is not that much I wouldn't think. I have many rocks weighing over 10kg ea. I suspect you will want at least 20kg, others with smaller tanks will know better. I think IRA said he had 60kg in his 4 footer? I know I had over 100kg in my 5 footer. Not sure man, trial and error, but best get saving. Rock is the single most important part of the tank. Pie
Anthony
far out and how much per kg? you must be mad of money
Pies
The going rate for LR at the moment seems to be in the $15-$20 range. I paid $15per KG for mine + freight for most of it. Made of money? You've been to my house, do we look rich? Pie
Anthony
shit that must cost loads for frieght quick easy answer=HELL YES
Ira
55kg ish now...Close enough to 60. But I think about 10kg of that's in my sump and my tank's unfortunately starting to look a bit like the dreaded wall of rock. I got the last batch of base rock for about $7.50 kg, but that's cause I've got connections.
Anthony
where abouts do you guys get your rock from? i dont want to much rock and i want to built some sort of reef rack
misnoma
My tank has 35-40kg of rock in it (if you want something to compare with). I was considering getting some base rock to add to it, but I'm still not 100% sure on that, kinda like it the way it is
