Tony.Bates
Hi Folks I seem to be having a snail epedemic, despite fishing about 10 out of the tank every day. I seem to have a mix of flat and cone shaped beasties. I read that getting a clown loach might be the story, because they eat snails? At present I have 28 neon tetras, 2 BN catfish, and 4 sunset platies. Will a Clown Loach be a good companion for this bunch (I dont want them eating each other) Do the Clown Loaches need to have own species company? Caryl
Clown loaches like company, need a good sized mature tank, and are very sensitive to water conditions. They are prone to white spot too.
Tony.Bates
Hi Caryl Tank is new, only about a month old. 215 litres. Hmm, well maybe they arent for me then - anything else that exterminates snails?

HummingBird
You could get another type of loach, they all eat snails I think.
Ira
Or you can live with them. They're good algae eaters and scavengers.
Luke*
There's skunk botias (another type of loach) i believe they originate from indian rivers but they are semi-aggressive so you'd want them in with something that can look after their own, not neons. I ended up selling mine. I've got 6 clown loaches now which are much friendlier but they never rid you of all the snails.
Newtman
i have two skunk loaches, and yea they do a wicked job of snail removing, only took about 4-5 days and i had a snail rid 4" tank as for gettig along, they can get a bit full on and anoy the other fish, but clown loaches i have never ever had any problems with towards other fish , they are a great comunity loach. and they should be fine with your fish tony Tim
Angus
i have four clown loaches in my 280L and i have never seen a snail - ever! Pretty heavy influx of plants from time to time so either i'm lucky, or the clownies do a great job the latter i reckon they are most fantastic fish to watch. they can be over enthusiastic at times which can semi-spook my discus at times but it is only in exuberance and nothing purposeful, and overall they have been great tankmates.... however they are getting a bit big now (largest is ~12cm) and so the new tank will be a purpose built loach tank with a fast cuurent and lots of caves tank stand currently under construction
jude
a loach tank would be fun, they are such attractive fish. Damn, now you've got me thinking again. I guess I could mix them with the tiger barb tank I want - the would inhabit different areas of the water wouldn't they? Cheers Jude
Snowman
Ditto with the loach tank, just need somewhere to put it to give enough hidey holes to them all, got 5 Clowns, 2 Angelicious, 2 Zodiac, 2 Striata, 2 Yo-Yo and 2 Queens. They all get on well but the Zodiacs are ummmm a bit boisterous shall we say, wondered why my Swords were ending up as one eyes and turns out it's the Zodiacs. Needless to say no snails in that tank LOL (lil b@#$%^s still find them in the filter though). The Striata would be the most peacefull i have found.
