warick hearn
Morning everyone.Does anyone have a secondhand protein skimmer that they want to sell? My tank is 5 foot by 2 by 2 foot and I need a bigger skimmer to cope with the load...at the moment I only have a via aqua which is crap and doesnt do the job at all!!!! its only made for a 200 litre tank and mine is 540+ litres. If anyone can help would be great. Warick.
Brianemone
for that size tank you need a fairly serious skimmer to do the job.

Ira
I'd suggest doing a bit more research before buying a berlin.

JoeBlog
Ive found a berlin for $629.00....does a 1000 litres....looks like the one for me.... I have owned a Berlin (2nd hand for a couple hundred) and from my experience, I would build one before I would buy one again. You can make a countercurrent air driven skimmer for MUCH cheaper than $600 even buying a very good airpump. The replacement of the air stones each month are a bit of a PITA, but you can get somce ceramic ones from the States that don't have to be cleaned for over a year. It would be much, much more efficient than the Berlin for less. If you don't want to build a DIY, I would consider the ReefX before diving into a Berlin. They appear to be similar to a EuroReef or ASM, which are highly rated in the States as a very good economy skimmer.
lduncan
Or save the extra $300 and get the Deltec, you'll find it much better value for money. Layton
Brianemone
id agree with reef, the 300 extra would be well worth it, depending on what model deltec it was

JoeBlog
I must say Layton, I do have skimmer envy! If I could afford it (or rather, my wife let me buy it), then I would certainly have the big Deltec as well. So for now, I am stuck with a (possibly distant) 2nd best. cookie extreme
i purchased my berlin classic about 6 years ago on special for $295 from HFF. never regretted it. only needs a strong pump to run it. removed heaps of crap when i started zeovit but has since slowed down to 2 collection cups of yuk per week. could i skim more? i would say yes! do i really want to skim more? i don't know! as my water quality is near perfect, all my corals look healthy and grow well. have had my alvepora, goniopora and fox coral for well over a year now. so my skimmer seems to be just the right size for my tank and system (in this case zeovit) and i can not see me spending lots of money on a new one. its not broken and seems to work pretty good so why fix it? to have the biggest gruntiest skimmer to show off with? and then loose live stock and replace it constantly? nah i guess i will keep my little berlin a while longer. should really clean it, properly, but don't want to murder all the little tubeworms that live in it. Pies
Haveing seen Cookie Extremes tank, I was quite surprised to see such a small and 'cheap' (no offence intended) skimmer running his tank, which is stunning. Need to keep in mind its being driven by an IWAKI 100 pump, but still shows that in a well maintained tank you don't need the mother of all skimmers. I'm happy with my skimmer, but Cookie Extreme's system is something to keep in minds if your looking at a new/larger tank and the skimmer price is putting you off.
