HummingBird
We're going to be putting a pond in our back yard in a few months and I was wondering which method of intake you guys think is better, to have skimmer or have it on the bottom. The filter's going to just be a barrell with lava rock in it and a submersable pump connected to the outlet. I've drawn some crude pictures so you get the jist of what I mean: Skimmer Bottom of the pond
Caryl
Intakes are usually as close to the bottom as possible to get better water circulation. Too close though and they tend to suck up crud.
BK
Saw one that a guy was breeding gold fish in that just had a pump and then covered in shingle. Worked like a UGF.

HummingBird
Awesome! Thanks Bill. That's more or less the design I was going for but I hadn't thought of the elbows on the top/bottom, great ideas. Instead of scouring pads I'm going to use Scoria though, should last a bit longer
HummingBird
Still undecided about where to locate the intake. My main qualm over having one down the bottom is that WCMM fry/Java moss would get sucked into it, but on the other hand skimmers are pretty expensive. Got any DIY diagrams for skimmers, Bill? Pegasus
Got any DIY diagrams for skimmers, Bill? Can't help you there... but there must be heaps on the net. The one in the pic was sent to me around three years ago by a friend in Vancouver Canada. He had heaps of ponds and bred fancy Goldfish for a living
