Frances
Kia Ora Everyone, My name is Frances and I live in Rotorua. I have had fish for hmmm about 6 years now started with tropical got tired of them and went to goldfish then back to tropical :-? then goldfish then tropical hehehehehe I have been toying with the idea of trying to breed guppies for the last couple of years but didnt really know how or If I could. I know they are easy to breed but I didnt just want mixed lucky dip fish I wanted quality fish that i knew were going to be a certain colour when they came out. Anyway before Christmas I got in contact with the local pet store and asked them if they could put me onto any guppy breeders and they pointed me in the direction of Peter. I rang him and went to his house to see what he had and what would be involved, he is just a fountain of knowledge that guy and helped me to decide that I would give it a go. I went away and set up 3 tanks and then got busy and never went back to him until January. He set me up with some fish to begin with which I very much appreciated. I now have my display tank and 3 smaller tanks. Now that I have the fish here and one lot have had babies I know I need more tanks My partner works at th hospital so I have notices on the noticeboard there asking for any old fish tanks etc. I actually got a bite yesterday and have to see a lady, she has tanks in her garage so thats cool. Anyway I cant wait to get more fish and to get different colours to work with. my favourite colour is purple and so of course I want to breed purple fish eventually. I cant wait. Well there you have it thats me in a nutshell and as you see I have burbled on.. I love the stuff on this site and enjoy reading it. Thankyou you guys for all your advice and help that you give to us newbies to the guppy world. Take Care, Frances
Caryl
Hi Frances, good to see you finally introducing yourself. I gather you have been looking around here for quite awhile. As you can see, we don't bite (well, not hard anyway). I have an aunt and uncle in Rotorua. Do you still have that aquarium place in the centre park? Run by Jo I think her name was? Goldie
Great to see another new fishy person. You are actually more experienced than I (I have only been hooked for 4 years) I began with guppies. Welcome
cat
Hello Frances. Welcome to a great place to hang out. Awesome people here and you can ask some many questions and someone will always respond to you. I have learnt more on here in a few months than a few years from books. Hope you let us all know how your breeding goes as you strive for the perfect purple guppy! Pretty little fish.
Warren
If you want to breed Guppies, just get hold of some males and females, put them in a tank, add plants and within weeks you will have lots. You could probably get them to breed in an old bucket, its simple, get guppies, add water, mix and presto, baby guppies!
Interfecus
Yes, guppies are easy to breed. I got them to keep (the fry of) with siamese fighter fry to make them grow faster, but I had to set up a spare tank as an overflow . Going to have to find somewhere to sell the excess. Breeding certainly seems to have slowed down since the female fighters killed both female guppies . GOt two spawns though, both from the same fish. The older spawn will be bred in a father-daughter cross to get babies as close as possible to the male I bought (75% related). The younger ones will be bred brother-sister to form slightly more varied fish. I like the male's tail and hope to combine it with other interesting characteristics formed by inbreeding. Warren is right, whip up a breeding trap, stick a female in it, and you get the whole spawn. Stick the female in a heavily planted aquarium or even clean bucket and you should get to keep most.
